Sherlock Holmes - The Naval Treaty / The Solitary Cyclist

good entertainment.

Two more stories from the early days of the Granada series. In "The Naval Treaty" an old schoolfriend of Dr Watson contacts him in somewhat of a predicament. Now working for the foreign office, he is ordered to make a handwritten copy of an important naval treaty between the Brits and the French (aren't photocopiers a wonderful invention!), but whilst stepping out to order some much-needed coffee the treaty is stolen from his desk. Staring personal disgrace and national catastrophe in the face he, not unsurprisingly, goes into a nervous decline, but of course, Holmes is on hand to help out. Set during a long, hot summer this makes for escapist entertainment on a winter's night. Even Holmes, normally never out of a black suit, goes into tropical garb for this one.

"The Solitary Cyclist" has Barbara Wilshere as a governess, Miss Violet Smith, who is unnerved to find that whenever she cycles to and from the local station she is being followed by a sinister-looking man. To add to her woes she finds herself being pestered by her employer's friend, a brash South African with a rather rough-and-ready approach to seduction. Not only that but their closest neighbour is a boozy de-frocked vicar. This is a very atmospheric piece, most particularly the scenes on the long, lonely road where Violet has to cycle. Plus we get to see Holmes doing a classy bit of bare-knuckle boxing in the local pub! If you haven't seen any of the Holmes series before, then I particularly recommend this one as a good starter.
