That damn closet!
Review date: 2008-09-06 Rating: 8 out of 10

This film has everything you could want from a horror film: a cute cast (especially the lead), lots of errant machinery, dodgy flashlights, lightning, power failures, movement in the shadows, and glimpsed monsters, oh, and a very cute lead. There's even a full moon (well, nearly full). It doesn't break any new ground but it does succeed in achieving an effective sense of mounting dread. The performances from the mostly unknown (and did I mention cute?) cast are good, and the filming and effects are polished; particularly the monsters, which move in a wonderfully creepy way. It even manages a neat and satisfying ending. Although in the grand scheme of all things cinematic this film only warrants three stars in the world of horror flicks it easily deserves four.

By no means a classic, but an entertaining diversion

Hmm, it seems this film suffers more than it gains from being associated with Wes Craven (though I've never rated him that highly, personally - so I approached They with a relatively open mind).
And it's ok. It has some good ideas, and a lot that is rather average. It's like an episode of the Twilight Zone, or in more modern terms Heroes, in that respect. Some scenes are well done, the swimming pool sequence is an homage to the scene in Cat People (the black and white original) and it rattles along at a reasonable pace with a few twists and sudden scares. At under 85 minutes They doesn't outstay its welcome either.
Wes Craven was probably happy to lend his name to it on account of these factors, and because he has always it seems been interested in exploring the collision between reality and unreality in his own films (albeit in a popular psychology sort of way, for my money). That aspect of the film works well enough, though the alternate ending makes it clear that the film makers were a little unsure themselves about where they were going with it.
It's no classic, but an entertaining enough yarn, with a few effective set pieces. I think it would probably be a good introduction to more thoughtful western horror for young teenagers, and was watching it thinking that my son (currently nine) would enjoy it in a few years, before he's ready for more grown-up and disturbing fare.
Oh, Laura Regan is so similar-lookin to Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby that it's probably the spookiest thing about the film!

they're under your bed...

pre-dating both darkness falls and boogeyman, They deals with childhood fears and their effect on our adult lives. it succesfully blurs the boundaries between reality and terror - the creatures (if they exist) remain hidden for most of the film and are used sparingly to shocking effect. laura regan isn't your typical herione - her exchanges with boyfriend marc blucas are based in reality. robert harmon directs with his usual eye for suspense (see the hitcher and highwaymen also).
the movie is resolutely downbeat. its dark, moist looking (fittingly given the nature of the creatures) and actually remains frightening after repeated viewings.
a short sharp shocker that will have you checking your wardrobe before going to sleep...

To clarify......

Wes Craven did NOT direct or have any imput into this piece of crap. Theyjust used his name to sell this otherwise waste of celluloid.

Cant get much worse

This film is a total dissapointing considering Wes Craven directed it. Its the typical cat and mouse chase, which you have to watch through the whole film, then it comes to a sudden pethetic end which makes you feel "whats was the point in this whole movie". On the upside, the demons were well animated, and there are some good scenes, but it fails to scare.
