Amazon.co.uk Review

Meryl Streep tried her hand at action films with this Curtis Hanson film and proved herself quite credible, bringing emotion as well as the willingness to kick butt. She plays a suburban mum and former white-water rafting guide who is taking her family on a raft trip for summer vacation. But overworked Dad (David Strathairn) can't make the trip so she and her son leave without him--and walk right into trouble. Killers on the run (Kevin Bacon and John C. Reilly) abduct them and force Streep to take them down the most dangerous stretch of river to elude the cops. Hanson understands how to pace and construct this kind of action fodder but it's strictly formula stuff, enlivened only by the depth of Streep's portrayal and the viciousness of Bacon's character. --Marshall Fine

River heroism
Review date: 2008-10-13 Rating: 10 out of 10

A beautiful film about the Colorado River. The hero is the river and the nature it crosses, the gorges and the rapids and the falls. And you will go down the river in a light boat. Beautiful indeed. Then the film sets a plot on that river of a nice vacationing family held hostage by the surviving thieves of a cattle auction robbery who try to escape the police after the robbery by using the river and the expertise of the mother of this family. This adds some family tension with a father who is working too hard as an architect and neglecting, in a way, his family, and yet he will save his wife and his son from the grip of the thieves after having escaped them before. Courage, for sure, tenacity definitely. And the beauty of this river all over and always. This plot is multiplying the beauty of the river just as if it took a lot of courage for the river itself to go down this valley and its gorges.

Brilliant film with great actors
Review date: 2005-12-03 Rating: 10 out of 10

Film starts with a disintergrating family unit. Workaholic architect dad ignores and is irritated by his family, so that all laughing stops when he gets home from work. He never joins in the fun and cancels holidays. Wife Gail(Meryl Streep) believes their marriage to be over as he disappoints their young son yet again, cancelling a family trip. However mother and son set off on their own to navigate a river by dinghy that Gail knew as a young girl (she had even worked as a river guide). As they are about to set off the son makes friends with another group of three men, who are going on the same journey on the river. One of them (Kevin Bacon) starts flirting with Gail. Just then, unexpectedly her husband turns up to join in with the trip after all. The thrills begin as the two separate boat parties become increasingly dependent on each other, much to the reluctance of Gail's family as their suspicions of the men deepen.
The film builds up the tension and shocks magnificently as you urge Gail to safety. I can watch it again and again.

THE BEST

I Love this film, it makes you jump out of your skin on many occasions, and the rafting scenes are spectacular, considering Meryl Streep did all her own stunt work. It's one of my favourite films ever, oh and the music is really good in it aswell.

This is so good

I sat down to watch this .. not really expecting to sit through the whole thing but I did. The reasons why are as follows. The director: Curtis Hanson knows his stuff and has paced the film perfectly. He's also the director of the masterpiece 'L.A. Confidential'. The Cast: Meryl Streep is well suited to her role and has some great moments in the film but Kevin Bacon wipes the floor with all the other actors. His portrayal of the evil robber is fantastic. He was born for the role. The plot: The story line is nothing amazing but it's very entertaining and doesn't try to be too serious, which is always a good thing. There is only one complaint, and that's the lack of extras but still, it's a great film. Buy.
