Amazon.co.uk Review
The discovery of valuable archaeological remains beneath a holiday caravan site is the cause of the mayhem in Carry On Behind. That said, the sub-"plots", which involve Windsor Davies and Jack Douglas as a pair of randy fishermen, a couple sharing their caravan with an outsize dog (no, it's not like that...), the obligatory giggling dolly birds and so on are all typical grist to the Carry On mill. The location is of course as bleakly miserable as such a place could ever be and will bring a frisson of familiarity to many Brits. Widely held to be one of the best in the series, the film would in fact have been a rather lacklustre effort were it not for the superbly over-the-top presence of Elke Sommer, whose performance as the strapping assistant to archaeologist Roland Crump (Kenneth Williams) seems like a wonderful hybrid of Ute Lemper and Charlie Dimmock. --Roger Thomas
The Hidden Gem of The Carry Ons ....
Review date: 2008-10-24 Rating: 10 out of 10
This film is often quoted as being an example of the decline of the Carry On series during the later years. Sid James was no longer a part of the series etc. However for me this is up there with the very best. This represents the last we may ever see of Great British Seaside Humour. It's all harmless fun and the cast are fantastic. In todays world filled with souless films lacking real characters and full of violence, this is a nostalgic treat and a great laugh. They don't make em like they used to! Kenneth Connor's seduction scene as the randy Major is one of the funniest scene's you'll see in a Carry On Film. Genius!

Crumpet at its bestReview date: 2008-09-20 Rating: 10 out of 10Cracking stuff. Just watched the film, thought it was great. All the cast are on top form. Full of fun from start to finish. Kenneth Connor playing a role that suits him perfectly, being at his very best as the Major who runs the caravan site. Kenneth Williams as Crump and his female Russian(i believe thats what she is) assistant made me burst out laughing everytime i saw them together. Very cheeky in parts, but the later carry ons always were. This one is better than 'camping'. I am a big fan of 'camping' but felt it became weak in the last 20-30 minutes of the film. 'Behind' is great from start to end.Carry On Again Camping ?Review date: 2007-10-27 Rating: 4 out of 10Part of me admires Peter Rogers for taking a gamble & bringing in fresh faces and a new writer to update the Carry On Camping scenario . The other part of me does wonder why Charles Hawtrey , Terry Scott and Hattie Jacques could not have done cameo's in this one . Their presence would have made it into a popular feel good film rather than the damp squib that it ended up as . It did badly at the box office & deserved to .The humour is crude & scenes repeat themselves with alarming regularity . Kenneth Williams hated the script for this & as with the Carry On Laughing TV series ( please see my review on that other Carry On disaster ) one can see that the successors to Talbolt Rothwell lacked his genius . Rather like Dallas in the late 1980's the people making the Carry On's in the mid 1970's were running out of any decent ideas as regular cast members upped sticks & left while the series declined into self parody and lost popularity with the viewing public as a result . This was a brave attempt to regain the magic of Carry On Camping - understandable perhapes as Carry On Dick was a rehash of the Don't Lose Your Head storyline and that had worked . What they should have done is dusted down the Carry On Escaping script that Talbolt Rothwell had penned or done Carry On Down Under which would have been about convicts going to Australia in the Victorian period . Peter Butterworth is wasted in Carry On Behind doing a repeat of his dodgy odd job man part that we saw in Carry On Camping . He was a brilliant comic actor and deserved a lead role in a film - not a bit part in a Carry On so weak that it reminds one of the many dire sitcom spin-off's of the the 1970's . The storyline is so feeble as to be invisible and the hunour reads like a parody of Carry On rather than the great Talbolt Rothwell wit as seen in Cleo , Doctor and Abraod . This could only have worked if Norman Huddis had written it as an affectionate tribute to Mr Rothwell .the gang are getting old Review date: 2007-03-19 Rating: 6 out of 10by 1975,alot of the carry on greats had decided to call it a day,few remained and with leading scriptwriter talbot rothwell jumping ship, the signs were a little doom laden to say the least,in some respects that fear is confirmed with carry on behind,in other respects the film has some great moments and deserves to be regarded as a carry on film with respect to quality,in most ways this is the last carry on that could be called good, but this is by no means perfect.
Old faves like kenny williams, kenny connor, joan sims, bernie breslaw, patsy rowlands and peter butterworth appear, some looking old and past it which is sad but they do their best with a script which is bawdier in parts than the carry ons of old,and this doesnt work as well as you would think.
Many will say that the script is a reworking of the brilliant carry on camping except with caravans ,yes i can see that, many of the themes are the same but the film is by no means a copycat film, the film has some new ideas which result in some very comical moments,i am a firm believer that my beloved carry ons were always better when the cheeky joke was implied rather than thrown out in all its glory and this film borders on that in places and some cast members look uncomfortable with the new found attitude of society in the late 70s but for all that this is a 3 out of 5 film and worth a place in your dvd collection. The Best Of The RestReview date: 2006-04-30 Rating: 4 out of 10The standard of the Carry On movies dropped considerably when Talbot Rothwell called it a day with the scriptwriting duties. The mantle was passed onto Dave Freeman who was always more 'Confessions' than 'Carry On',a fact reflected in the paucity of the last four Carry On offerings. This is the best of those four though it must be said that 'England, Emmanuelle and Columbus' were dire. Sex comedies, albeit with very little sex. Though this film is very much a poor mans Carry On Camping, it conveys an aura of innocence long since lost in this era of sophisticated posturing comedy, and lets all be grateful for that. The Carry On regulars all go through the motions, the new additions prove they are no match for the old familiars and in Windsor Davies & Jack Douglas we have the most unconvincing studs since Stan and Jack in 'On The Buses'. But that, of course, is its charm and together with a great comic performance from Elke Sommer, makes this entertaining viewing for those of us who sometimes yearn for the innocence of a time long since past.
