"McKaskel,she is one handsome woman"
Review date: 2007-08-22 Rating: 6 out of 10
Based on a book by Louis L'Amour,Sam Elliott stars as Con Vallian a wandering cowboy who takes newly arrived settlers from the east, the Mckaskel family, under his wing when they fall foul of Doc Shabbit's gang of outlaws.Vallian bluntly gazes upon the beauty that is Mrs McKaskel(Kate Capshaw)much to the chagrin of Mr(a slightly out of place Tom Conti) but he respects their values just enough to keep his distance.
Nicely played by all especially the always wonderful Elliott and Matt Clark as the dogged Shabbit, the script by James Lee Barrett affords all characters, even the minor ones, some good moments and the action sequences are very tense and well handled.
The golden age of the westerns has gone and with notable exceptions such as Peckinpah,Boetticher and Mann,it is pieces like this and Open Range,Lonesome Dove etc that we can really see the west as truly wild.
