Amazon.co.uk Review

Jack Bauer is having another one of his "very bad days" in the second series of the ground-breaking real-time thriller 24. Once again the hours are ticking by with more guaranteed cliffhangers than a convention of mountain climbers. Holed up in a Los Angeles condo and estranged from his daughter, Jack is no longer on the government payroll; unfortunately for him, this small fact doesn't seem to matter to President David Palmer and the NSA who call him back in to the CTU and give him 24 hours to infiltrate a terrorist organisation who are planning to detonate a dirty bomb in the city of angels. All Jack wants is to get his daughter out of the city, unfortunately Kim's new employer, the abusive father of the child she is nannying, has other ideas.

Fans of the original won't be disappointed, as there are more than enough shock moments in the first few hours to hint at the climactic build-up to come, while newcomers can quickly get involved in the lives of Jack and his family. There are some new characters to bolster the veteran cast and, interestingly (although not surprisingly given the outcome of the first series), Jack's character has taken an altogether darker, more psychopathic turn. The danger the characters find themselves in also has a much more global impetus, grounded as it is in the war against terrorism. Although the territory is more familiar this time around, this second series is just as much a high-tension, taut, adrenaline-fuelled ride as the first series, and one that will have you glued to your TV for the next 24 hours. --Kristen Bowditch

'Explosive' second season!
Review date: 2010-07-06 Rating: 10 out of 10

Having devoutly watched season 1 of 24 only recently and absolutely adoring it, I purchased the successive seasons without hesitation. I must admit, as a previous reviewer stated, I had doubts as to whether this season could possibly match the intensity and magnificence of season 1 and it's 'on-the-edge-of-your-seat-action' which I must admit raised my blood pressure ever so slightly! However, I was pleasantly suprised. On first viewing season 2, and the intial episodes, I was critical and suspicious, and was not immediately involved in the plot, nor did I find the action or situations particularly interesting or stimulating. But, once the notorious Jack Bauer was infact back in the game, this all started to change.

I won't reveal or ruin the plot for those of you that enjoy the intrigue, but I will say that I genuinely believe that this season managed to surpass season 1 with flying colours, and of course, riveting action from start to finish. I worship Kiefer Sutherland as an actor and I personally feel he alone makes Jack Bauer the complex character we (I in particular) have all grown to love and admire. In this season, Bauer develops even further and we see the multi-facets of his character and actions. I love both Bauer and Sutherland, as they are both rebels, and go against the grain, so to speak. Bauer in this season demonstrates integrity, honesty, humanity, patriotism and bravery. I find the constant and continued parallels between him and David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), the president, incredibly interesting. Both are reminiscent of great leaders, both are honest individuals and both wish to defend and protect their country and more importantly, people. I find these qualities highly admirable and appealing and throughout both season 1 and 2, I empathised immensely with both characters, even more so when all the odds were against them and with the government constantly attempting to undermine them. I actually found myself in knots when complications arose!

As always with 24, I enjoyed the frequent consipracies and elements of both political and governmental corruption. This season is jam-packed with twists and turns, and as with season 1, keeps you on edge. I personally can see many parrallels between the plot and events that have actually occured within America over the past ten years, particularly when this season was being filmed, making it even more intense and challenging. 24 as a series, invites you to question morality itself, justice, the world we live in, how little we are actually aware of and the things that go on behind closed doors without our knowledge. It certainly makes you question the integrity of political figures, their campaigns, the sincerity of our governments and the natures of those individuals high up on the 'food chain', who seemingly manipulate others, have incredible power/control over the world, and have the ability to orchistrate terrorist attacks in their favour, primarily for financial gain. But I won't indulge too much in conspiracy theories.

I thoroughly look forward to the remaining seasons of 24 as it is a truely wonderful series, with fantastic actors and plots. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend 24 to anyone and everyone as a true gem of television and entertainment, with depths and concepts of morality beyond merely superficial comprehension. Buy, watch and enjoy!

Creative political fiction

Twenty-four hours of television for one series, with advertising, slightly shorter without, thanks God. The series is a perfect thrilling adventure and till the last minute we do not know the end, and I won't tell it. The situation is political and it explores, under G.W. Bush, what should be done, hence should have been done after 9/11, in the case of a nuclear international crisis, what's more a nuclear attack on the US territory. First the President is black and the vice-president is white. The president divorced his wife and she hates it and wants his head. That makes the plot very thick if not frankly sick. A nuclear bomb is smuggled into the US and will eventually explode though not in the midst of Los Angeles as initially planned. A tape is delivered that seems to prove a meeting took place in Cyprus between the representatives of three Middle East states and a terrorist organization. The President organizes the response, including a military immediate strike against the three countries concerned by the tape. The tape is validated by all services, though one agent of the main security agency has doubts and events little by little convince him that the tape is a fake. The President trusts him and thus keepts the military action going but stops the final strike that will have to wait for the result of Jack Bauer's research and mission. The whole series is very good because the story line is systematically disturbed and warped by new elements making the target evasive. The warmonger is the Vice President, an allusion to Cheney, and the main argument is that military action cannot be decided on the basis of any information or evidence if there is a doubt about it. Any doubt must freeze the action and dynamize the work of all security services to explore that doubt. The twenty-fifth amendment to the US Constitution is largely used in the last hours of this day and it shows some are ready to use it to block a debate or even an investigation in order to make a military decision, which is apolitical decision, inescapable. The series does not try to really discuss the validity of the procedure but shows how in some circumstances the amendment can be manipulated by some to side-track the President himself. In other words the series shows us that the very Constitution of the US contains some loops that could be used by a clan to impose their power. At the same time the series tries to reassure us about such situations that are exceptional and in a way negotiable.

24: day2

This a brilliant, fast paced action sequel. The story twists at the most unexpected times and is captivating. Latterly it becomes a little uncredible but this is irrelevant as by then the story is so gripping you'll not really notice. Don't be fooled by the one hour episode is for one hour of a day, or that there are 24 episodes - it flies past so quickly, the writers and producers are to be congratulated. Two points though, [first] it would be better to have seen season one beforehand as the same characters appear and the relationships are developed in this season and [second] don't have anything else important to do - you'll end up watching hours at a time at the expense of all else!!

Mostly good.....but

More of the same - great action, plenty off cliffhangers, and a credible hero in Jack Bauer. Plot twists and turns just enough to keep you guessing, so all in all a good buy. We've just bought season 3, so hoping for more of the same standard.
A couple of characters are - to my mind - less than plausible. The President's ex-wife's influence and the ease with which she strolls through security and convinces President Palmer about anything is getting a bit daft. However, the Daft award absolutely goes to Kim Bauer, who has the common sense of a lemming thus far, and has been kidnapped (at least) six times in the first two series by my count. Being kidnapped six times in what is actually two days is just laughable nonsense, and I really hope the writers have made her role more believable from series 3 onwards. We actually fast forwarded her scenes toward the end of S2, as we just got bored with her.
