The children's classic Norse tale cartoon, simply and stylishly told
Review date: 2007-05-04 Rating: 8 out of 10
'In the lands of the North, where the black rocks stand guard against the cold sea, the men of the Northlands sit by their great log fires and they tell a tale....' So began the sagas of Noggin, king of the Nogs, and his wicked uncle Nogbad the bad.
I really enjoyed Noggin the Nog on the telly as a small child - the B&W Saga of Noggin the Nog was produced way back in 1960, but the original masters must have survived fairly well as picture quality is reasonable for VHS and the age. It was conceived, written, drawn and filmed by Oliver Postgate (spoken words & script) and Peter Firmin (drawings) - both then went on to set up SmallFilms and create more Noggin the Nog episodes, some in colour in the 1970s, and other children's TV classics such as The Clangers, Bagpuss and Ivor the Steam Engine. Peter Firmin (the illustrator) based the Noggin series style on the Isle of Lewis Chess pieces. Even 'The Clangers' were derived from their book Noggin and the Moon Mouse. Not all the filmed episodes of Noggin are here on this video, as the full Noggin series runs to 260 minutes and this VHS cassette is only 83 minutes long.
You can however buy the complete Noggin the Nog TV episodes very cheaply from the Dragons' Friendly Society as either new VHS or DVD, plus they do the books: see dragons-friendly-society.co.uk (the VHS tape insert has even been autographed by Peter & Oliver in an attempt to shift them in this era of the DVD). Not sure what age would appreciate Noggin the Nog these days, but my son (9) and daughter (10) did happily watch all the episodes once - and naturally anyone who remembers watching the simple series as a child when first shown will them enchanting today.
