Simple Romance Full of Charm

Looked at one way this is just an old fashioned comedy romance typical of the 1950's. So what? Looked at my way it's a simple story, wittily told, with a superb cast making every moment meaningful. Boy meets girl when girl's cat climbs a girder on a bridge and can't get down. Boy risks neck to save cat. The cat's name? Heathcliff -- and he's also perfectly cast. Jack Hawkins, one of my favorite actors, is planning to move the family to Australia where he can pursue designing innovative furniture. His daughter loves the idea of living in Australia, until the boy succeeds in getting her serious attention. Everyone is soon very emotional and it's hard to see how there could be a happy ending. I wish I could find the VHS of this movie, even though it's engraved in my memory.
