Excellent Hardy Adaptation
Review date: 2008-05-26 Rating: 8 out of 10
I have just seen this adaptation for the first time and find that, bar a few slightly stagy scenes (interior dialogue scenes) in the first hour, this film, made in 1971, is well up to the high standards of contemporary BBC period drama as now deservedly popular. Robert Powell is excellent in the title role and all others act very well indeed. Despite the total length of over 4 hours, the interest is pretty much kept throughout. It has to be said that the last hour is anguishing to the point of utter depression! Recommended, though.
Robert Powell gives a very good performance as Jude and the rest of the cast - including Fiona Walker as Sue - are also good. However, this is one of the least entertaining dramas I have seen. I am not the sort of person who cannot bare sad stories, for example, I am a huge fan of the BBC's magnificent adaptation of 'The Mayor of Casterbridge' - another Hardy tragedy. However, 'Jude the Obscure' is not only tragic, it is very depressing.
I would only really advise avid Hardy fans to watch this drama. Anyone looking for an entertaining drama should look elsewhere.
