Danny loves Freya, but Treya loves Trevor...
Review date: 2005-03-31 Rating: 8 out of 10
"The Year My Voice Broke" is a touching coming-of-age film from Australia. Set in the 1962 in a small Outback town in New South Wales, the title refers to Danny Embling (Noah Taylor), who has always been in love with the beautiful but independent Freya Olson (Loene Carmen). They have been friends since childhoo, but, unfortunately, she falls for Trevor (Ben Mendelsohn), the school's star rugby player who has a taste for running afoul of the law. Writer-Director John Duigan must be working from material close to home here, because he does an excellent job of catching the pain and torture of teenage longing, especially in the scenes where Danny followz Freya and Trevor on their dates. The ending for the film is certainly not a happy one, but what is important is that it certainly rings true. "The Year My Voice Broke" is as bitter-sweet as you would expect from the title. Standing out in the supporting cast is Bruce Spence (from the "Mad Max" movies) plays Jonah, a railroad signal man who is writing the first truly erotic Australian novel. This 1988 film won five Australian Film awards including Best Picture.

A beautiful movieReview date: 2004-08-02 Rating: 10 out of 10Made in 1987, this wonderful movie is set in the country town of Braidwood in the early 1960's.
Braidwood was 100 years ago near the epicentre of a gold rush and for several decades was a very busy town. Two World Wars and a Depression later, and Braidwood became a forgotten, sleepy backwater where the outside world no longer intrudes.
The surrounding weathered granite hilltops and brown grasslands combine well with the old colonial architecture of the town to provide gentle and slightly melancholic background for the story which focuses on the two main character's coming of age.
Noah Taylor & Ben Mendelsohn are brilliant as (respectively) the way-to-sensitive-smart-kid, and the country-bumpkin-headed-for-trouble as they compete for the attentions of "Freya", who is growing up faster than either of them...
Nice soundtrack, too...A Story so close to homeReview date: 2004-07-30 Rating: 10 out of 10This motion picture is probably my all time favourite as it is the only movie that a can empathise with every character. It is a story so close to my own life in a small town in country Western Australia. The characters are so real that I can almost name every character from someone in my own town. From the opening scene, where two bullies hassel Danny Embling(Noah Taylor),
to the scenes of "Pub Talk" amoung the locals ,all bring back such vivid memories.I firmly believe that this is the most
poignant presentation of life in a small country town in Australia in the 1950,s and 1960,s.that has ever been put on film.It is a true to life story of a young man coming of age dealing with many changes in his life in close but insular community.
