Amazon.co.uk Review

Super Troopers is a dumb-and-dumber cop comedy starring the members of comedy quintet Broken Lizard, which will no doubt be unfamiliar to the majority of audiences this side of the Atlantic. Although don't let that put you off what is a no-brainer, but often very funny cop caper. The bungling patrolmen are of course hopelessly inept at solving real police work and instead spend more time battling with their nasty rivals in another police force. But when budget cuts loom, the boys have to become real cops for once to prove their worth, not just to their frustrated and long suffering boss but to each other.

The gags come thick and fast and the sheer enthusiasm and timing of the cast ensure that, although very old fashioned in its comedic sensibilities, it remains a consistently entertaining and stupid in equal measure. Watch out also for a small cameo by formers 70's super heroine Lynda Wonder Woman Carter as the mayor.

On the DVD: Super Troopers is packed with extras that belie its limited run and modest success at the box office. There are two commentaries by cast and director, 17 outtakes with optional commentary that are as good as anything that made the final cut and a trailer. The Dolby 5.1 mix is sharp and often loud, and the picture quality on the whole very good. --Jon Weir

Synopsis

Broken Lizard, a comedy troupe formed by former students of Colgate University, wrote and star in the enjoyably lightweight comedy SUPER TROOPERS. They play state troopers who preside over a quiet stretch of highway in Vermont. The low crime rate allows them time to pursue their own interests--mostly playing elaborate pranks on each other and on the hapless speeders they stop. Their captain, O'Hagan (Brian Cox), asks them to settle down for a while, because the governor (an amusing cameo by TV's former WONDER WOMAN, Lynda Carter) is thinking of cutting off their funding and turning their precious highway over to the jurisdiction of the hated local cops, headed by the sneaky Chief Grady (Daniel Von Bargen). The wild and not very bright troops are unable to stay out of trouble, so they'll only keep their jobs if they somehow manage to crack a big drug case. Director Jay Chandrasekhar (who also stars as the smartest trooper, Thorny) does a great job of keeping things quick and light, and the easy camaraderie of the Broken Lizard troupe gives even the grossest humor in the film an appealingly playful quality, harkening back to the innocent days of movies like STRIPES.

Funny, silly low-brow comedy
Review date: 2007-09-07 Rating: 8 out of 10

This one is from the Broken Lizard comedy team and concerns a bunch of highway patrol officers who are more intent on larking about than doing any actual police work. They may be good at playing the `Meow' game, but their ineptitude means their department is about to be closed down, and the only hope of survival lies in solving a case of drug smuggling and murder. Can they stop covering each other in shaving foam long enough to get the job done?

Super Troopers is the third full-fledged Broken Lizard film I've seen (I'm not counting the dire Dukes Of Hazzard), and this is about as funny as the other two (Club Dread and Beerfest). It's pretty low-brow stuff, but I'm not ashamed to say I like that kind of thing, and this one kept me laughing throughout. Also, once again the team have taken the time to attach their jokes to a half-decent story, which is always nice to see.

The cast are all good, but the surprise for me was seeing classically trained Shakespearean actor Brian Cox acting in such a daffy film. He's actually very funny, though, especially during the drunken third act.

If you're a fan of Broken Lizard, or if you like the kind of adolescent comedy on offer in films like Eurotrip and Van Wilder, this is definitely worth a watch. It's consistently funny, introduces the amusing concept of Afghanistanimation, and even has a brief appearance by one time Wonder Woman Lynda Carter, still looking pretty damn beautiful for a woman of her age.

Don't be expecting Citizen Kane...this is super trooper land

You may say low budget is bad, but this is extremely funny and Clerks was low budget. Its not gone with the wind and its not Clerks, but it is made by an extremely what I feel to be a talented young group. Firstly don’t be expecting anything classy or sophisticated, this is stupid and exactly what it is meant to be, a very stupid comedy resulting in endless laughs. It does have a feel of very low budget and a bit of dodgy acting but there are funny gags, mostly to do with drugs, it opens with a frantic scene which really does set the standard for the film, the troopers are very stupid and not good at the job but create a ridiculous amount of gags, while trying to beat there rival gang. It’s what I call a ‘mates’ film, if you have a bunch of friends round, its one you can really laugh at, especially if you are of a younger generation, having said that my friends dad is sixty four and loves this film, admittedly he’s not a film buff but a lot of us aren’t (including me) he is just a person who watches the odd film for fun. I strongly advise you that if your looking for a good film to just relax with and not think much about I would strongly advise this because it is funny.

The special features are not the best but serve the film well, a funny commentary is the highlight, and a reasonable alternate ending tops it off. The extended scenes do fair well, and are funny but if your buying the DVD, it should be for the film and I wouldn’t rely greatly on the special features even though I find them funny (but maybe that is just my immaturity).

Please see this film, if you don’t like it well at least you tried, but I have a feeling you will, if you do like it believe me it is very rewatchable and for £5.97 on Amazon, it’s a steal.

being honest i have to say this is the funniest film i have ever seen . forget about the big budget films like road trip and american pie the wedding ,well ok don,t forget them because they are quite funny but if you have,nt seen this yet then do.It,s amazingly funny and it beats the crap out of van wilder party laison the gags are thick and fast and like some films there not racial or offensive.the acting is brilliant especially from brian cox and the guys who play mac and foster.and another good thing is thet in most places it,s only a tenner which in my opinion is an abserlout bargain.do not judge the film because it little known and the actors are praticly unheard of .I LOVE THIS FILM ,I LOVE THIS FILM, I LOVE THIS FILM.PS;you,ll love the beggining scene with the three dopers, its hilarious.

Stupid or Funny?

Definitely intended for the "younger" audience this film still has some very funny moments, certain scenes will stick in your minds for ages, and the film overall is not a bore to watch, it even comes with some very funny extras.
If you, however, are not one for slapstick or stupidity then don't waste your time, it is not for you.
