Rekha plays Umrao Jaan with conviction. Her beauty and grace as well as her talent helped her to win a National Award for this role. The supporting cast are also excellent, particularly Shaukat Azmi as Khanum, the madam who buys Umrao Jaan. The lovely ghazals sung in the film by Asha Bhonsle also won several awards and they are as popular today as when the film was released in 1981.

Based on the famous Urdu classic, this film explores the life of a beautiful, accomplished courtesan (tawaif) in 19th Century Lucknow. From her kidnapping as a young girl, the film charts her life as a tawaif, her love affairs, her attempt to escape from her world and, at the end, a realisation of her own self and worth. The exquisite costumes, exotic sets, wonderful music and talented cast contribute to what many belive is Muzaffar Ali's best work.
