Agreed - too short!

The three-part comic novels are brilliant and well worth more reads due to them being so full of really far-out and memorable scenes.
Sadly, this film, although very good, is way too short and doesn't include the more 'interesting' scenes from the comics. It could easily nail most of it in perhaps 3 hours.
The key scenes are there but without the elaboration you read in the books. I think a lot more could have been added to make an even more unforgettable and quite horrible experience! Would need the 18 certification but unsure if it would be deemed TOO much for production? Be interesting to know. More human snails, the eerie mosquito women scene and the row houses in book 3 would explain a lot more about the horrors of the elusive "Spiral" phenomina.
It is visually stunning, greens and vivid reds and reminds you that it is a comic book tale. A psychadelic look.
One of my favourite films for sheer imagination and definately recommended to Manga/comic/surrealism fans or anyone wishing to see something quite different. I mean, suicide in a top loader washing machine??? Great!

FantasticReview date: 2008-05-27 Rating: 8 out of 10This is a great surreal film. You will never look at snails or spirals in the same way again. It was good, but only about a third of the actual story, so much was left out. It's filmed beautifully in places and the imagery holds true to the comics but I was left a little disspointed at the abrupt ending, where there was so much potential and story left untouched. Ah well, it was still good though. Give it a whirl!Comedy HorrorReview date: 2006-03-18 Rating: 8 out of 10Comedy Horror is the best way to describe this tale of a sprial obssessed town.
I was pleasently suprized by this offering as regardless of the rather low quality DVD transfer as this is a very interesting example of Japanese film making. The director is known for his music videos and that really comes across in this film as you get the idea that every single shot has been carefully thought out creating a visually vibrant film. HOWEVER I think the narrative which starts to explain why spirals attack the town but then never really resolves itself lets the films down quite a bit as do the tacky spiral graphics. However the acting made me burst out loud laughing several times, whether it was meant to do that is a different matter!
I think this is a must for those wanting to experience all aspects of Japanese filmmaking and horror as there's is nothing like this elsewhere. One to watch with with friends, for laughs not shocks ..... although there is something involving a big bug and an ear but I'll leave that for you to discover!!!!!
EntertainingReview date: 2005-12-21 Rating: 8 out of 10I'm still not sure what to think of this film. I was so eager to be scared and freaked out by it, but felt a little disappointed. There is so much that could be cut out of the film and not make a difference. Silences used for effect went on too long.
The things that were good about the film were fantastic though, I loved the effects, the ideas were fresh and not the usual ju'on repetativeness that seems to be churned out by the truckload. Give it a chance but don't look at the box too closely or read the back as it ruined it for me.
