The first series of The Osbournes is a hilarious fly-on-the-wall documentary concerning the day-to-day domestic misadventures of Ozzy Osbourne (former frontman of Black Sabbath), his relatively sensible wife Sharon and their kids Jack and Kelly. Having made his millions and been to rock & roll hell and back, Ozzy seems content nowadays to put his feet up in the sofa of the kitchen of his palatial Beverly Hills abode. However, a host of problems--including poorly toilet-trained domestic pets, noisy neighbours, his continuing obligations as an ageing metal superstar, his inability to operate the state-of-the-art telly and his ever-quarrelsome kids flapping fractiously about the place--forbid him a moment of peace.

This real-life sitcom fodder has led many to describe the Osbourne family as "dysfunctional"--however, despite the generous helpings of expletives with which the series is garnished, like The Simpsons, they're actually a loving and stable family unit underneath it all. The series isn't perfect--the stylised MTV treatment is occasionally obtrusive and more Ozzy and less of the career-hungry teen brats would be welcome. Still, it's a gloriously refreshing change from the usual bland evasiveness of celebrity profiles.

On the DVD: The Osbournes boasts a welter of wittily packaged special features. These include a commentary track ("Aww, look at Kelly, being nice! Can't we have that Kelly back?"), an "Ozzy translator" (English subtitles) for the benefit of those bamboozled by his Brummy accent and "Ozzy's Ten Commandments" delivered impromptu by the great man, tidied up into biblical-speak in the subtitles ("Thou shall cling tight to the moneybelt of thy father"). Although Sharon declares that she's "worried about the oranges" on the DVD, she needn't be. Given that this is a transfer from video, it looks clean and pristine, necessarily so in that it enhances the colourful, almost cartoon air of the series. Sound wise, there are no problems either, despite the competing setbacks of thick accents, background music, "voices off" and barking. Everything is picked up, from offhand grunted remarks to ear-splitting tantrums. --David Stubbs

There is only so much you can listen to Ozzy shouting 'Sharon! Sharon!' and screaming 'F*** this, F*** that' at his dogs. You may as well just watch it on Channel4.

With so many 'American" sitcoms polluting our screens, this is a much needed smack in the face to TV at the moment. The Osbournes without a doubt is one of the funniest programmes around, with Jack and Kelly constantly fighting, Ozzy trying endlessly to get various appliances in their house to work, and Sharon spending a lot of her time canoodling the shed load of dogs that they have.
Like a cross between the Simpsons and the Adams Family, you're guaranteed to laugh until you cry at least a few times during this series. Even if you're not a fan of the Osbourne's careers, this is still a must see for anyone, one episode and you'll be hooked!

Funniest moments include Ozzy ranting about the bubbles included in his live set, a dog therapist, Sharon throwing meat at the next door neighbours, and Ozzy telling Kelly to write him a note because his hearing has gone over many years of loud music blaring in his ears!

F***ing brilliant

I found the first series of The Osbournes very helpful to understand the madness of their life!!!!!!!
Ozzy you just love for being honest and dosent hold anything back especially when he saw the set to his stage with BUBBLES!!!!
Sharon has excellent one liners such as when Jack hadnt got out of bed.
Kelly is just every girls idol, she gets to stay out as late as she wants and has reasons to make alot of noise, but it always seems to be Jacks fault.
Jack is the most gorgeous, personality that is. He really doesnt give a f**k. Only what his clubbin mates think and finds it very hard to apoligise when things always go wrong for him.
Overall this series is a must have for Osbourne lovers!!!!!!

Ozzy Rules !!!

TOTALLY UNCENSORED? in a word no. The dvd has been edited in a few places and if you have seen it on MTV then you will be able to pick these out too, for example there is a piece where Ozzy bares his behind on stage and it is blurred (maybe a good thing) but in the extras there is an option to view this without the editing, why? I don't know. And when jack does his rendition of 'Who Let The Dogs Out' It gets poorly edited over, there are a few other instances but I've ranted enough, I just felt it spoilt what was otherwise a 5 star dvd
