Amazon.co.uk Review

The Care Bears Movie was essentially a 75-minute commercial to introduce a new toy range, the Care Bear Cousins, disguised as a smarmy story about sharing feelings. The film ushered in a spate of cheap animated films created solely to sell merchandise to children. The plot interweaves the stories of Kim and Jason, two lonely orphans who have given up caring, and of Nicholas, a friendless magician's assistant who is seduced by an evil spirit. The Care Bears resolve everyone's problems, naturally. Years later, the Care Bears' popularity has waned and the film stands as a reminder of one of the less admirable uses of animation. The stars, hearts, rainbows and saccharine songs can't disguise the barefaced commercialism behind the threadbare story. --Charles Solomon

Brilliant!
Review date: 2006-02-23 Rating: 8 out of 10

This film has a fantastic plot considering it's a children's movie, and characters which you truly care about. It's exciting and even scary in places, and the ending is brilliantly climactic. Unlike many kids movies, it can hold your attention all the way through, even if you're an adult and seen it before!

The animation is beautiful and colourful, and the message is good without being too moralistic. Oh, and there are some cracking songs which make you want to get up and dance around the room!

This was my absolute favourite film when I was younger, and even now I'm 20 I can still enjoy it. It far surpasses any of the animations currently on kids' TV, and whilst it doesn't have any of the knowing humour of films such as Shrek or Finding Nemo, it has a beautiful and appealing innocence that is rarely found now.

Buy it for your kids (especially girls) if they are ages 2-7, or buy it for yourself as a great retro reminder which you'll love to watch on cold days with a mug of tea!

Care Bears... Stare.
Review date: 2005-04-10 Rating: 8 out of 10

Made on a decent budget, although for rather dubious reasons. The first of the Care Bear's movies has, however, stood up a lot more to the tests of time than other films with similar histories. With animation a touch better than that of Saturday morning television and a darker plot than the supposed target audience would suggest. As an evil spirit, bound to a book tricks apprentice magician Nicolas into systematically erasing the feelings of the World. The spirit's intentions are never really explained fully, nor do they need to be, the Bears need an enemy of pure evil to fight against. It nice to see competent enemies in an animation like this.
The personalities of the bears are good enough without being pedantic. Certainly the two bears that bear the brunt of the film, Friend Bear and Secret Bear, have a friendship that doesn't seem forced. The other bears get various amounts of show time, with 'mascot' Tenderheart leading the way. The introduction of the cousins is kind of formulaic, sorting out the problem that the bears find themselves in during their journey through the forest, but it works on the films own terms.
The transfer of the picture is crisp and sharp, which is good, since the lands of Care-a-lot and the Forest are rather primary in their spectrums. The sound is still in its original mono, although it comes in multiple languages (English, German, French and Italian). The only real extra is the original trailer. Personally, I've never liked trailers from the eighties and this one isn't one to change my mind. Still, it's nice that it's been included.
In ending this film does go on record for having the largest number of bloopers that I've seen in an animated feature. Most of these consist of characters being somewhere they shouldn't be, Tenderheart in particular appears in different places. One of the biggest goofs is Braveheart Lion having his tummy symbol, fully painted. This is about halfway through the film (when he shouts 'Let them go'). Most of these are only on the screen for very brief periods of time, but could provide some amusement to fans of animation goofs, or to Care Bear fans. I for one am glad that they are still in the film.
Personally I think that the Care Bears Movie is one of the best, if not the best, 'Toy-based' animated films ever made.

Brings back those memories
Review date: 2004-08-01 Rating: 8 out of 10

If you are an adult that used to watch this as a child, then please buy it as the memories you recall are lovely! However, if you are considering buying it out of curiosity, then you may not enjoy it so much. If you're thinking of buying it for your children, then go ahead, as its that perfect story that kids adore. The imaginary wonderland where everything is as sweet as sugar, and where every body is nice. It has a good moral to it, as it portrays that everybody should be friendly. Also, that nasty people shouldn't be ignroed, but corrected for their wrongs. Its a fairly good story too.

I only bought it because I really wanted to relive my child hood memories. Watching it and seeing the (really scary at the time) evil book, the care bear stare, and old Kim and Jason made me smile so much.

Kitsch!

Ok movie.

I watched this movie in my younger days and I still like to watch it every now and then. The songs are ok. I think there are some flaws in the story line but over all it does all right. My favorite characters in the movie are not the care bears but Nicholas and the evil spirit. I like their spirit of rebelliousness and I always thought Nicholas's powers were neat. My two favorite parts are where he runs around trying to zap the bears and at the end where he comes out on the roller coaster car with that weird light behind him. Now that scene is just eerie. Although certainly not the most wonderful movie I didn't think it was that bad. Much better at least then the sequel which I felt just didn't have the same feeling as the first.

Still a winner today

I found my video copy of this while clearing out the loft, and although i'm 19 i still found i enjoyed it just as much as when i was young. It is a movie that is totally focused on good things and caring, unlike some movies kids watch today that are all violence and no real plot or substance. If you want a nice light hearted film, then this is the one. It's still one of my favourites today!!!
