Chabrol under achieves.....
Review date: 2001-11-01 Rating: 4 out of 10
I found this movie rather disappointing. Chabrol's direction is laboured, and fails to develop any compelling momentum and interest in the story. (somewhat fatal for an intended thriller)
Perkins' performance is rather mannered and excessively nervy, whilst Orson Welles, sadly doesn't make much of an impression, (or possibly the reverse was true) Chabrol is a direction for whom I have an enormous respect, but his approach to the material, left a lot to be desired.
Much better examples of the director's oeuvre are available on video, "Le Boucher" for example.
