The Secret Life of us
Review date: 2003-02-27 Rating: 10 out of 10

The Brits go mad about Australian TV in the same way the Aussie's love British sitcoms.

Many tune in to Neighbours, Home and Away to see the blue skies and yellow beaches. The Secret life of Us comes as no exception. Set in St Kilda, a Melbourne suburb it follows the life of a young group of 20-somethings, the can have, will have generation.

The programme has a particular appeal to women thanks to the good looking Will and intelligent Evan, strong female characters like Kelly and some insightful writing by Judi McCrossin.

The Secret Life is no bog standard soap. This is reality TV with the sunshine. The issues and events that propel the various storylines are mature and daring. Personal relationships are the overriding concern throughout, and here they're given the chance to be presented in a honest way.

The series 1 part 1 provides a digestible set of storylines. There is Miranda (albi Tucker) who many 20 somethings will remember from Heartbreak High who lives with a gay actor and a scaffolder. Gabrielle is living with a lawyer whose social conscience is crumbling fast. Doctor Alex lives with a would-be author who pays rent late and has countless girlfriends. Kelly arrives, trailing an ex-boss who refuses to leave his wife. The story lines give as an idea of what to come. But the Secret life is far from predictable it's full of twists and turns, comedy and tragedy. As Evan says: "You never know what'll happen next, or who it will happen with."
