Aimed at teens with numb senses of humour, The New Guy earns its chuckles mostly by accident. Most of the comedy is DOA, although the cast--especially DJ Qualls in the title role--possesses a modicum of scrappy charm. DJ plays a "blip" on his high school’s social radar, briefly jailed for chronic misbehavior and mentored in coolness by a fellow inmate (Eddie Griffin), who becomes the funky "new guy" at a new school, where he’s worshipped as a mysterious hipster and attracts the hottest cheerleader (Eliza Dushku). Directed without a shred of inspiration (by a co-writer of There’s Something About Mary) and looking like a drab 16-millimetre industrial film, the movie would be a waste of time were it not for its abiding cheerfulness, rock-star cameos (Henry Rollins, Gene Simmons, Tommy Lee), Lyle Lovett as DJ’s dad, and a fresh cast that almost makes this low-brow mess worthwhile. --Jeff Shannon

Absolutely AWFUL
Review date: 2008-02-03 Rating: 2 out of 10

This is probably the most terrible film I have ever watched. Well made it about 20 minutes in and could not bear anymore. Only saving grace is Eliza Dushku but you can just skip to the scene where she is in the changing rooms. God knows how this has got 4 and a half stars. It is a comedy and my friend and I did not laugh once.

Funny, stupid comedy
Review date: 2007-03-01 Rating: 8 out of 10

Just so you know, this one makes no sense. I don't mean that as a criticism, because I came to admire this film for its flagrant disregard for logic. It stars DJ Qualls (the skinny guy out of Road Trip) as exuberant nerd Dizzy. Dizzy is the butt of all the jokes at school, and after a nasty and humiliating injury he ends up in prison with Eddie Griffin, who sets about teaching him how to improve his image. The plan is to get himself expelled so he can start fresh with a whole new persona at a new school.

This DJ Qualls is a pretty funny guy. If you've seen Road Trip, you'll know what he's like - all gawky and awkward but always very likable. He plays a similar kind of struggling, optimistic geek here, and it's great fun to watch this guy try all his tricks to fit in. Everything he does is hilarious. Also in this one is Zooey Deschanel, not to mention the glorious ball of joy that is Eliza Dushku. Hubba and, indeed, hubba.

I really liked this film. It made me laugh quite a bit, which is the most you can ask of any comedy. If you're a stickler for logical stories, maybe you should give The New Guy a miss. If you want some laughs, however, I recommend you give this one a try.

YAY!!!

well wat can i say but this is got to be one of the greatest comedies. it was a big hit in america, but seems if you ask ppl in uk most ppl haven't heard it since it went straight to dvd over here, but anyone who does see it will love it....

It was many awards including Eliza Dushku winning best bikini Scene Award for this film, no supprise why lol....

Still abit confused by the HOFF being in the film but got to love the skateboard being broken over tony hawks head....

Why is this film funny?

Somehow the undeniable charms of Eliza Dushku, odd and unexpected cameos and the wild eyed humour of undercover brother make this straight to video trash worth watching. DJ Qualls pretty much reprises the role from Road Trip as a loser reinventing himself in a new school after an extremely embarrassing incident in his last one. What should be a complete unwatchable disaster is somehow salvaged by general weirdness and quirky humour. I would still only recommend to the bored or hungover - it really does take a certain appreciation of the moronic to enjoy this. Something that fortunately I do possess.

The New Guy [Unrated Directors Cut]
Review date: 2004-06-08 Rating: 10 out of 10

This film is one of the best films i have ever seen! Especially with the extra cut scenes, it makes the film 3 times as funny with them in, i had seen the film at least 20 times before and thought it was excellent but with the extra scenes i couldnt stop thinking about them and laughing for hours! To whoever reads this i really do advise buying it if you are in to comedys, trust me!
