Terrific double creature feature
Review date: 2008-11-04 Rating: 10 out of 10

This release contains both the original Alligator and its sequel Alligator 2-The Mutation.
Alligator-
Ramon, a pet baby alligator is flushed down the toilet, only to grow to a huge size after dieting on dead laboratory animals injected with growth hormones. It soon graduates to chomping on the population of Chicago, so dogged policeman David Madison(Robert Forster) joins forces with herpetologist Marisa Kendall(Robin Riker) to attempt to stop Ramon before he kills again.
Alligator is a brilliant monster movie, with a fantastic cast, a great story and above all a scary giant alligator. Robert Forster is a brilliant choice to play the hero, because he delivers a fantastic performance, and their are notable turns from Dean Jagger as oily crooked company boss Slade and Henry Silva is hilarious as macho vain big game hunter Colonel Brock. The alligator is terrific especially in the scenes where animation is used to great effect, and theres some real tension when Madison descends into the sewer to hunt Ramon down. 5 out of 5
Alligator 2-
Villianous property developer Vincent Brown is attempting to bully the people out of their homes by the river by a mixture of strong arm tactics and by dumping chemicals into the water, to kill off the fish population. The unfortunate side effect is another giant gator, who starts munching on the locals. Most of the police are baffled, but Detective Hodges(Joseph Bologna) talks to the locals and attempts to wade through layers of corruption(the City Mayor is in cahoots with Brown) to stop the alligator in its tracks.
This isnt as good as the original film, but its an enjoyable little film in its own right, mainly due to some excellent characters such as wisecracking crocodile hunter Hawk Hawkins(Richard Lynch) and Steve Railsback as the unscrupilous Brown. Bologna is almost as good as Forster was in the original. The alligator effects suffer by comparison to the original, with the animated alligator only glimpsed briefly, most of the time we are in rubber monster territory, and the story borrows heavily from both its predecessor and other monster movies. Still its an unfairly maligned film, and enjoyable to watch. 3 out of 5
I give this release 5 out of 5, as it gives the viewer an enjoyable night of monster movie madness, and please give the sequel a chance, as its not that bad

Buy it for the first movie
Review date: 2008-07-19 Rating: 8 out of 10

The first movie on this double-bill is great. It was never gonna win any awards but as a cheesy 80s horror movie it is good silly fun. However, the second film is utter crap, but as it is under £4 you wont mind.

Monster movie from the 80's entertaining and fun to watch
Review date: 2007-05-12 Rating: 10 out of 10

One of the better `Jaws' rip-offs (along with `Piranhas') this film is still fun and entertaining to watch. The special effects haven't aged too badly. In fact they are certainly still much more convincing than some of the CGI garbage that is saturating our screens (small and big) nowadays. While the plot is predictable and the acting could be better, there are some truly scary and horrific moments, a good dose of humour and few great action scenes. Have fun!

The film has a good 1.85:1anamorphic transfer, Dolby 5.1 and DTS 5.1 English soundtracks and few decent extras.

This 2 discs DVD set also contains the sequel `alligator 2, mutation' which I haven't watched yet so the review above applies only to the first film.

AMAZINGLY GOOD!!!
Review date: 2007-04-22 Rating: 10 out of 10

I never really liked much of
the 80's
apart from a nightmare on elm street
and afew others!

This however was fab!!!
In 'Alligator' a pet alligator is flushed down the toilet. Once in the sewers it feeds on contaminated dog flesh used in illegal experiments. Mutated by chemicals it stands thirty-six feet long with an insatiable appetite for flesh. 'Alligator 2' sees the continued fight against the mutant alligator in the sewers. This time the task is assigned to a cop and his rookie assistant.

Very gor, but not
scary, highly
fun!!!
I RECCOMEND THIS!!!

Alligator -A Classic With Plenty Of Bite!
Review date: 2004-03-10 Rating: 6 out of 10

I remember seeing this film years ago,so when I spotted it on Amazon I just had to buy it.
It is a classic if not predictable type of horror movie, although by todays standards probably a bit tame.
The plot is very good with plenty of gore along the way.
Alligator 2, which is also in this set is a poor attempt at a sequel. It just doesn't compare to the original. The acting and the story is very weak.If you buy this as I did purely for the original Alligator film then you won't be dissapointed.

As with many sequel films the first is in this case always going to be the best.
