Amazon.co.uk Review
In the third series of Angel the titular vampire with a soul was forced to stand alone thanks to the (temporary) death of his beloved Buffy and her show's move to a new network, with no crossover between the two allowed. He returns from seeking peace in a demon-haunted monastery to find the LA Angel Investigations team fighting supernatural crime in his absence. Fred is still haunted by the nightmare dimension from which they rescued her; Cordelia's visions get ever more painful and debilitating. The schemes of the evil law firm Wolfram and Hart become every more imaginative and dragon lady Lilah Morgan becomes even more of an enemy when lusting after Angel. Unbelievably, Darla, Angel's vampire sire and lover, turns up, pregnant with his child and is tortured by inexplicable motherly feelings as well as a raging thirst for human blood. For a few episodes things go pretty well--but Angel's enemies, both those he has made in his quest for redemption and those he made when he was unadulterated evil, are still out there. Stephanie Romanov comes into her silky own in this series, making Lilah Morgan all the more seductively evil because she is clear about the choices she has made; the satanic law-firm of Wolfram and Hart are this show's most inspired creation. As the series moves to its close, Wesley (Alexis Denisof) has hard choices to make. The devastating climax is compulsive viewing and this series also contains one of the most impressive single episodes of the entire show: in "Waiting in the Wings" writer, director and creator Joss Whedon comes up with a classic ghost story as Angel and his crew go to the ballet and find a performance that is literally timeless.
On the DVD: Angel, Series 3 DVD box set is generously stocked with extra features--a season overview, commentaries on three episodes, a documentary on the way scripts are transferred to screen, and an overview of the story of the doomed vampire Darla. Of especial interest to fans are two deleted scenes--one from the ballet episode "Waiting in the Wings", in which Amy Acker (Fred) and Alexis Denisof (Wesley) dance a pas de deux at once touching and hilarious, and the other a hilarious scene from "Cordy", the cute situation comedy in which Cordelia stars in an alternate universe. --Roz Kaveney
Just to let you know that there is now an official season 6
Review date: 2009-04-16 Rating: 10 out of 10
Angel was the best series on television, and I felt such regret when it ended. If you're reading this, chances are that you probably feel the same. However, because it was never the fans who deserted Angel, Joss Whedon himself personally supervised an official (and canonical) Season 6 in full colour graphic novel format. It's called Angel: After The Fall and it continues the story as it would have been had Angel continued. The drawn likenesses are spot on and all the action, plot and humour of the TV series has been captured perfectly. As someone who never buys comic books, I bought the first volume Angel: After The Fall: After the Fall: After the Fall v. 1 (Angel (IDW Publishing)) hesitantly, but it's fantastic, it really is, and if you want to find out what happened after that fight in the alleyway - the official story as told by Joss Whedon - then you must buy this. Find out what happens to Angel, Gunn, Spike, Illyria/Fred, Wesley, Lorne and also Gwen, Nina and Connor. Hope you don't mind that this isn't a review of Season 3 as such, but I hope you've found it helpful.

what Joss does best Review date: 2008-12-29 Rating: 10 out of 10one of the things i particularly enjoyed about this season is that it is classic Joss wheadon writing. Anytime one of the characters gets any ounce of happiness Joss will take it away. We've seen this before in many of Joss's works like buffy angel the love of her life runs of she gets reduced to sleeping with spike, then we move to angel in the first season one of the main characters killed of mid season before any romance between him and another leading character, but i think im moving away from the origional point which is how in this season angel is given a son and everything seems to be going fine then woop kid gone to hell (literally). the only problem i do have with angel is david boreanaz because he isn't the greatest actor in the world however he does manage to hold his own reasonably and doesn't let the program down so ...poorer in quality but pretty decent...still finding its feetReview date: 2008-07-21 Rating: 4 out of 10season three isnt a perfect season of the show and at times is pretty confusing but it does eventually find its feet.
not as good as season 1 was and isn't at all like Buffy the Vampire Slayer(a far superior show)and fails to step out into the light...but it does provide character development and some decent episodes so its not all bad.

as is said it is a decent season that is worth viewing, but needs to hit its stride.Angelic.Review date: 2008-04-11 Rating: 10 out of 10 The brew is perfected here, the balance between melodrama and humour is perfect. At first I thought Holtz was a lame idea for a villain, what can a 19th century human really do to angel? was my line of thinking. How wrong I was, because he is no physical match for angel it is his cleverness and sheer determination than evens the odds a little. Also he isn't evil, not really he see's himself as the hero not a villain. There is much to recommend this series it truly is excellent.'Angel' finally realizes its potential! Review date: 2008-03-03 Rating: 10 out of 10Season 3 of Angel shows many things: how much the show moved away from its parent programme, the excellent Buffy; how much the show grew since its inception; how daring the writers and producers got with the whole idea of the show; and most of all, how stupid the people at Fox are for cancelling this unique, brilliant programme. I get angry every time I think of how they cancelled it.
Anyway, they did, so all we have left are the truly brilliant Seasons 3, 4, and 5, and the slightly flawed but still great Seasons 1 and 2.
The third year of Angel is all about surprises and consequences-- Darla comes back, and she's not alone. Wesley takes a big risk and ends up out in the dark after betraying Angel and the group. Angel continues to brood but finally gets a chance at unconditional love...and Cordelia nearly dies from the burden of the Visions, then has to decide whether or not to leave the group forever (or so she thinks). Gunn (my favourite character) finally gets more screen time and a better storyline, as he and Fred get together, which at first I didn't believe but as time goes on you see how cute they are. Lorne provides brilliant light relief as the demon who reads people when they sing and becomes friendlier to the whole group as he moves into the hotel.
But the best thing about Season 3 is the relationships between the characters, new and old. Unlike earlier seasons, the standalone episodes are not as good as the season's full story arc, which brilliantly links Wolfram and Hart, the prophecies about Angel, his past misdeeds, and the theme of redemption and all this leads to two of the best things about these episodes: Holtz and Connor. The idea of Angel with a baby takes a bit of getting used to, but by the end of the season it's an amazing storyline. It also ends on the best cliffhanger Angel ever got-- the Season 4 ending isn't as good at all, and though the Season 5 one is the best, it's the last one so it's too sad to appreciate :(
People are so often thrown off Buffy and Angel for some reason I don't understand, maybe it's the fantasy stuff, but anyone who likes brilliant television needs to watch both. Immediately.
Standout episodes in Season 3: Well, all of it, but here are my faves: Offspring (Angel/Holtz flashback), Quickening (Darla approaches labour), Lullaby (a brilliant ending for Darla), Waiting in the Wings (a creepy and funny Joss Whedon episode), Loyalty (talking burger!), Sleep Tight (betrayal), Forgiving (Wesley misery), A New World (Connor/Angel interaction is brilliant and poignant), Benediction, and the finale, Tomorrow.
