This has to be my favourite River Phoenix movie. A great cast, brilliantly directed and beautifully shot. A love story with a twist, Phoenix on top form and playing the sensitive, lost and lonely soul as only he could .The Region 1 edition comes complete with audio commentary from the film's Director, Nancy Savoka which proves insightful and highly entertaining. A timeless nugget!

Good FilmReview date: 2007-08-26 Rating: 10 out of 10This is a little gem I found a few years ago and eventually managed to get Region 4 (Australia)(plays as region 2), several months ago at quite a reasonable price about £11).
This and another River Phoenix film "The Thing Called Love" have been hard to come by for quite some time, but are worth watching.
This film is quite funny mostly (not comedy) and touching, well acted & a good sound track to add good atmosphere to the film.
Worth the hunt to get hold of this film.
Is this ever going to come out on Region 2 DVD????????????Review date: 2004-02-01 Rating: 10 out of 10In my opinion the finest film River Phoenix ever made. Set in the early mid 60's, before the full horror of the Vietnam war was realised, this heartwarming story follows the relationship between Phoenix and Tomlin after a disastrous first 'date'. Phoenix is about to be shipped to Vietnam and he's desperate to find a partner for the Dogfight, an annual competition where the stakes are high. Tomlin is a frumpy folk fan who works in her mother's cafe who can't believe her luck when a handsome Marine asks her to a party. Needless to say the night holds many surprises for everybody in the film and doesn't quite turn out the way either of the main characters expected. The film reflects the mentality of the times. Most people have never heard of Vietnam and those that have believe the war will be over in months. Folk music is finding it's feet in the fledgling anti-war/anti-draft movement and although hippies don't officially exist yet, the conditions are ripe for the frustrated baby boom generation to move away from the restrictive, consumerist lives their parents led.
Phoenix and Tomlin play off each other perfectly. They're like pepper and salt and sometimes you forget it's just a film. It's funny, heartbreaking and embarrassing. It's the perfect film to watch time and time again and I think everyone will recognise something of themselves or someone they know.
Unfortunately Dogfight is extremely difficult to get hold of in any format, let alone Region 2 DVD, with dealers asking upwards of £20 for a second hand video. God knows I've tried and unless you're one of the lucky people who already has a multi-region DVD then be prepared to fork out for one, or wait until TCM or Sky Cinema show an edited version with commercial breaks.
There are a lot of Phoenix fans about and I'm sure the demand must be there for a Region 2 DVD. Perhaps it's time to start lobbying the distributors?
