colosseum as if they never went away
Review date: 2005-12-20 Rating: 10 out of 10
This is the best music DVD I have the good fortune to have bought.
It persuaded me to see the band live last year, and my God I was not disappointed...Barbara Thompson was standing in for the late Dick Heckstall Smith and it was as if 1970 had returned, if anything with a greater togetherness. This DVD is a real gem. It comes across as a live tour de force...and anyone who knows, knows that Colosseum are, and always have been, one of the most electrifying live bands around. Any music lover of any genre would revel in seeing these superb musicians at the top of their form.
SO... Colosseum Live. On DVD. But played in 1994, 20 years after they broke up, by a whole load of REALLY OLD people (like me!)????? How awful is that going to be? Reliving their youth, but propped up on stage or in wheelchairs?
NO. This is even better than the original.
UTTERLY STUNNING. Spine tingling - it brought tears to the eyes.
And they played everything off Colosseum Live, plus the Valentyne Suite in its entirety. Glorious music, and the film is great too!
The show presented on this DVD has all the great Colosseum numbers, and some takes are different than those on the 1994 live CD (yet another reason to fetch this DVD). Chris Farlowe is a little creepy, in the way he looks directly into the camera, but the band's excellent delivery shines through the concert's 113 minutes.
Having some previous experience with live DVDs by other bands, I'm surprised how good this recording turned out to be. The concert was recorded back in 1994, and yet the image and sound qualities are remarkable good. The colors are full and well saturated, quite unlike any other live DVD I've watched. There are some faults - scan lines are often visible (my guess is it wasn't originally mastered for PAL), and I preferred the stereo mix to the 5.1 mix (which ended up having almost everything in the center speaker on my system). But the important thing is that the show looks and sounds great.
The additional 90 minutes documentary is somewhat 'free of form'. It contains snippets of footage from Colosseum's early years, which only left me yearning for a full DVD of that stuff. The interviews were amateurishly recorded and filmed, and the entire thing could have been easily cut down to 45 minutes... but ultimately it 'delivers the goods' as it does tell the story of the band - albeit in a slightly sparse fashion.
All in all, a highly enjoyable DVD of an outstanding band.
