a very philosophical and smart movie
Review date: 2008-04-28 Rating: 10 out of 10

Coming from an academic who works in physics and neuroscience this is one of my favorite movies of all time. The play that it was adapted from was written by a mathematician and the movie explores some very interesting philosophical questions about life and existence. It is not fast paced and the plot only really comes together towards the end so you will need to be patient or even watch it twice to understand how things fit. Visually the movie is amazingly beautiful and I highly recommend it.

Good acting nearly rescues flimsy
Review date: 2007-11-12 Rating: 4 out of 10

This must be one of the most inadequate plots (fantasy or sci fi I'm not sure) of all time. By chance Joyce (Tilda Swinton) and George Barber (Tom McCamus) meet at a self service restaurant and both live multiple parallel lives in real time. There is no action, just dialogue suggestive of and about parallel existence (Possible Worlds) taking place between the same two people at the same time and no excursions into their parallel existences.

There is a sub plot of aging Inspector Berkley (Sean McCann) investing a series of murders where the victims brains have been removed, there seems no connection to the main plot except in one existence Joyce is a scientist researching rats brains.

The concept is tailor made for Swinton who is ably partnered by McCamus, and it speaks volumes for their acting that I was actually involved for most of the film, without them I would have stopped the film almost before it began.

A feeble curiosity, possibly worth a rental.
