Amazon.co.uk Review

It now seems clear that year five of Stargate will be remembered as the one where something went awry with Daniel Jackson. Lots of behind-the-scenes rumours fuelled the idea of cast tension, but whatever the problem, his sudden departure from the show was obviously via a hastily contrived scenario. In retrospect, there must have been a problem for some while before the weird penultimate episode ("Meridian"). Michael Shanks looks frequently bored in his rare moments of individual screen time as he infiltrates a Goa'uld meeting and even when making friends with a creature everyone else wants dead. In fact, there's only one point when everyone really seems to be having fun, and that's in the spoof 100th episode "Wormhole X-treme!"

Most shows go through a run-around, skin-of-their-teeth period awaiting renewal and it certainly seems to have affected storylines this year. For example, a next generation of younger SG teams is introduced. Replacements? The most unfortunate aspect of things however was that not a single episode managed to stand alone on its own merits. Every single story was dependent on a part of the greater interwoven warring species threads. Some of the one-off tales were terrific in and of themselves, but it was as if the writers fell into the trap of having to refer to as much backstory as possible, perhaps to ensure loose ends could be easily wrapped up? Ultimately none of this mattered since the show went on for quite a while. --Paul Tonks

I love linking stories
Review date: 2004-07-19 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is season 5, and it is a bit different from season 1-4. The reason for this is that this season links various previous episodes together. I happen to love this, I love it when old characters are returned to us, and that seemingly unimportant episode that you watched a few years ago suddenly becomes oh so important.
However, from reading the reviews on here I see that this isnt everyones cup of tea. So, for me I give it 5 stars because I would like to see much much more of this sort of thing, the story lines are strong, they dont let the previous seasons stories down whilst extending them.
Just so you really get the picture, you can go about 5 or 6 episodes in a row with the words "previously on Stargate SG1" although they are all continued from different episodes/seasons.

Stargate Season 5 overview
Review date: 2004-06-17 Rating: 6 out of 10

The season starts well with Teal'c going back to serve his former master. But sadly after that some of the story lines go awol.

This is propably due to the off going problems at the time and with the shows future uncertain at the time did not help matters.

The special effects are good and there are some good action sequences throughout which are the seasons remdemming features.

The storylines are not as strong as season 3 and 4, but there are still some good episodes like the spoof episode, "Wormhole Extreme". Some endings leave a lot to be desired with a good build up of tension in "Last summit" and "stand" only for the storyline to end leaving you feeling short changed.

The same applies to season 6. But I have heard that season 7 was superb and the shows future secure for an 8 season and the spin off Atlantis, so the future looks bright. So hopefully seasons 5 and 6 will be the only bilps.

Good buy at an knock down price.

Not the Best of...
Review date: 2003-10-22 Rating: 4 out of 10

Season 5 is where the franchise does indeed finally begin to show it's true colours. Episodes come together to form interlocking storylines, no longer standing alone. That's right, there are storylines running fom one episode to the next and different cast members have different storylines. In other words, Stargate SG-1 becomes a soap opera.

This is a shame, because the acting, characterisations and special effects are still superb - if they were not, a much lower rating would be appropriate. Offscreen cast conflicts may have been to blame for the necessity of writing separate and ongoing storylines. Perhaps the producers should have called it a day after season 4. It is unfortunate that commercial wants have overridden artistic needs.

Having said that, there are some fine moments. Perhaps the best of these is the 100th episode, with its mock TV show which manages to make some good points about extraterrestrial life as well as delightfully sending up the whole concept.

If you want to buy seasons of Stargate SG-1, make this the last you get. Get all the others first. That way you wont be disappointed.
