Don't bother with this one

In an attempt to be more active I have bought a couple of exercise videos to do in my living room, including this tape and also a Rosemary Conley video.

Unfortunately the Lucy Benjamin workout was anything but - the moves were complicated in places and the routines were not interesting.

If you enjoy a good workout, with music to sing along to then this is not the tape for you.

I bought this video as I only ever seem to work out to Rosemary Conley and needed a change. I thought a dance-based workout might be a bit more challenging too. Unfortunately not. I normally work out 2-3 times a week so am relatively fit and need a challenging routine to get me out of breath. Lucy just couldn't deliver. I've been through the video twice now and can do the routine in my sleep which wasn't even very interesting the first time round. And Fitz is obviously aiming his instruction at people that have never followed a routine before as the pace is REALLY slow. I get the feeling even Lucy gets bored by the end!
Serves me right I guess for buying the cheaper video rather than the Pineapple Dance one at full price. Surely that can't be as bad as this! If anyone wants a copy, I'll be giving mine to the Cancer Research shop in Reading this week.

Beginners beware

If you are a complete beginner to this type of exercise, you may find learning the moves a bit difficult at first. There are also many changes in direction and turns which can get a bit confusing.

It is true that the dance routines are repeated quite a few times but, showing the steps more slowly at first would have helped enormously in getting a real grip on the routine from the outset. Obviously Fitz is an excellent teacher but I couldn't help feeling that the pace was directed more towards dance students than Joe public. I have to say I have one or two other dance videos which I mastered almost immediately such as Patsy Palmer's Club Workout and the excellent Irene Miguel's Keep Fit the Latin Way, so I was a bit disappointed with this one.

The warm up is more of launch straight into a dance routine and the cool down only lasts a few minutes so you may want to add some stretches of your own.

I can't say I agree, though, with the other reviewers that it is not much of a workout. If you follow Fitz and Lucy for the hour the video lasts, you can't fail to get out of breath and it is at least a good workout for the legs. I would imagine it would be fun once you have mastered the steps. Just don't expect to get it right first time.

Get back to The Square, Lucy!!!

I enjoy dance-based fitness routines, so I thought this DVD would be ideal for me. How wrong could I be?!!! Although it's fun to try to keep up with the steps the first time through, the dance is taught so slowly that I didn't even break a sweat. The only part that really gives you a workout is the two minute section at the end where they put the whole dance together. Because they teach the steps in so much detail as you go through, you've pretty much mastered the entire thing after one viewing, and there's no incentive to do it a second time, with Lucy and 'Fitz' going over each step about 50 times. I suppose you could keep repeating the 2 minute end section, but I'm sure you'd get sick of that after a few runs through. Maybe I'll go back to classes instead - far less repetitive....
