Amazon.co.uk Review

If you're only going to buy one Pop Idol product this season, make it What My Heart Wants To Say, the debut from series runner-up, Gareth Gates. It's idol album number two (three if you count Rik Waller's), and it's released just in time for the Christmas shopping frenzy.

Boasting a hefty 16 tracks with the singles all tucked at the beginning, this is hard going at first but despite the inevitable fillers, it's a pretty consistent collection. Gareth and his team have covered most bases for their target audience, doing pastiches of artists such as Atomic Kitten, Kylie, Westlife and most notably (where Gareth excels) George Michael. "Sentimental" is a fine funk-tinged pop song but could easily be mistaken for classic George on a dark night. This is surpassed by the standout "Good Thing", which is also influenced by the Wham! man but has a touch of the soulfulness that Will Young could have done with on his debut.

"(I've Got No) Self Control" is a great piece of disco pop that should keep the Kylie kids happy and Gareth (whether assisted or not) sounds in great voice showing a lot more confidence than he did during the earlier part of 2002. So that's the positive side, the downside is that a fair few of the 16 songs are mere fillers where similar results could be attained with a cheap keyboard's demo button. Nevertheless, there are enough decent songs to make it worthwhile. --Georgina Collins

Gates in Talent Shocker
Review date: 2004-02-07 Rating: 10 out of 10

To be fair I'm 23 (so not the usual Gates follower). Bizarre, I know. I recently caught him rehearsing for his UK Tour and was impressed. So, I bought this and thought I'd give him/it a chance.
Basically its got OTT Westlife-o-rama (that always manages to pull you in) and Jackson 5, George Michaelesque killer tunes! Thats right folks the one with the stutter is a poptastique nutter!

Tunes to watch out for (incase they beat you to the floor) are:
Anyone Of Us
Sentimental
Good Thing
I've Got No Self Control
Alive

And for the touchy feelers out there:
What My Heart Wants To Say
With You All The Time
That's When You Know.

The only criticism here is that instead of 16 tracks S Records could've put out 10/11 with the rest as b-sides on the singles. But overall. Excellent debut! Pop Idol has provided us with two interesting new talents. Watch this space.

Gareth Gates - What My Heart Wants To Say
Review date: 2003-11-23 Rating: 10 out of 10

Simon Fuller has really unearthed this boy's talent, after becoming the runner-up in Pop Idol, Gareth has taken the path down the pop highway, while taking a few hearts on his way.

The album opens with the massive singles Unchained Melody & Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake) which is UK pop at it's very best, other standout tracks on this album include the terrific Sentimental, the funky Good Thing & taking out the album with the breathtaking That's When You Know.

This album is more seasonal, tracks that make you dance, tracks that make you cry & tracks that are very anthemic. I could not recommend an album with as much versatility as this. 5/5

The next Paul McCartney

One word. Wow. This album has changed my life. It has shown anyone can overcome l-lifes hurdles.
The cover (although its so good it should be called an original) of suspicious minds blows Elvis out of the building. It is one the best songs I have ever heard. It made me c-cry.
Unchained Melody is far superior to Robson and Jeromes original version. It made me cry also.
In conclusion, do I honestly believe this is the best album ever made?......Yeah.

A very pleasant surprise

I got this album for my Christmas and wasn't expecting to like it much. I've always thought Gareth has a lot of talent and so on, but I believed the hype that he only sang ballads. So when Santa brought me this gift, I was unsure. But I gave it a listen and after I'd got past the singles - this is a great pop album.

There are a few excellent funky numbers, some of which would have made much better singles than the ones selected. It Ain't Obvious, Downtown and Sentimental being particular new favourites of this reviewer. There are the expected lush ballads, and they show off Gareth's beautuful voice to be well beyond that of a typical boyband member. With you All the Time is exceptional, with stunning lyrics and a melody that gets under your skin with each subsequent listen.

At 16 tracks it is probably too long. I think they weren't sure what to include, so put in a bit of everything. There are only three tracks I'm not keen on and without them this album would have got the full five stars. At least 10 tracks are fantastic and have become firm favourites. It has come as a surprise to me, but this is my new favourite album and the best pop album I have owned for several years and I'll be dancing to it for some time to come.

I would recommend it to all pop fans including those who like it a little bit funky.
