Amazon.co.uk Review

Probably the most comprehensive anthology of any musical artist to date, the 47-track Best of Bowie traces the guises of David Bowie over the last four decades. From the androgynous, glam rock rebel of the 1970s, to his more recent incarnation as the self-labelled, postmodern pop ironist of the 90s. The collection provides an added insight into wider developments in fashion, music and the pop video. Most of the early material is taken from television music programmes such as The Old Grey Whistle Test ("Oh! You Pretty Things", "Queen Bitch", and "Five Years"), however, as the demands of television and music promotion progress, Bowie ventures into more sophisticated stand-alone videos culminating in 1983's "Let's Dance". As with any biographical visual record of the past, there's plenty of material, which will embarrass Bowie. Throughout his cheesy performance of "Rebel, Rebel" for Dutch programme Top Pop, Bowie sports what looks like a ginger tomcat on his head. There's also the George Michael-style bleach blonde quiff for 1987's "Time Will Crawl". Despite the mountains of material on both discs, there are a number of unexplainable absences such as "Changes", "Under Pressure" and "Sound and Vision". Watch out for the Best of Bowie part two.

On The DVD: Best of Bowie's animated menus, and the opening menu sequence of both discs are excellent. Although there are no listed bonus features, the discs are swarming with extra "Easter egg" features such as alternative videos and vintage interviews (these can be accessed via the track-listing menu, by pressing the RIGHT followed by the SELECT key on selected tracks). Background information about each video is displayed before the start of every promo, which is reproduced in the accompanying glossy booklet. The sound and picture quality is variable for early videos but improves (admittedly erratically) for later videos. --John Galilee

Living Legend
Review date: 2008-09-12 Rating: 10 out of 10

The best greatest hits collection in the history of rock & roll...David Bowie is the man who changed my life...and the lives of a generation.
Before Ziggy I was a football thug, skinhead and `bad boy` - but BOWIE showed me another way of life and introduced me to pop culture.
The great man is a true living legend and apart from my three children and my current soul-mate the `love of my life`.

BUZZ KIDS
Review date: 2007-04-13 Rating: 10 out of 10

David Bowie was and always will be the leader of THE BUZZ KIDS and the godfather of GLAM ROCK.
Ziggy Stardust is the greatest rock creation of all-tme and DAVID BOWIE the greatest ever rock and roller.
This album is a fitting tribute to the living legend.
It is true to say that without BOWIE there would not of been music and fashions like plastic soul and New Romantics.
Bowie was always more than just a singer.
Without him and his leadership - there would of been NO Glam Rock, No Young Americans, Spandau, Garry Johnson, The Buzz Kids 0r classic tribute songs like IF LOOKS COULD KILL or SUBURBAN REBELS.
This is a collection of songs that will last 100 years - they will never die or fade away.

easter Eggs
Review date: 2005-12-27 Rating: 10 out of 10

I'm having trouble with some of the Easter Eggs in here! Does anyone know how I can view the alternate mtv version of "Blue Jean" or the alternate versions of "Seven Years in Tibet", "Survive" and "Miracle Goodnight"?

Best Of David Bowie (DVD Review)
Review date: 2004-12-13 Rating: 8 out of 10

If there ever was an expansive video anthology arranged in a chronological fashion (Apart from Bruce Springsteen) that showcases the eclectic and eccentric genius of David Bowie, then this is it.
Featuring some of the BEST songs from Bowie's career, one can assuredly be stunned seeing and hearing the wide vistas that the genius has dabbled with, both in music and fantastic video production values. The early 70s a la Ziggy Stardust era sees bright and synthetic sci-fi costumes amidst some amazing classics like Space Oddity and Rebel Rebel. The first 4 songs have been taken from BBC sessions and the only grouse here is that the sound quality could have been tweaked far better than merely ripping it directly from the original tape.
Moving on to the early 80s, a slick Bowie in an even slicker suit goes pop tapping with Ashes To Ashes, Blue Jean (A really cool spooky video), China Girl et al.
Mid-80s sees strong pop influences in Absolute Beginners, Underground (Another eclectic Bowie video), Day In Day Out (Reminds me of Peter Gabriel) with Bowie looking at his charismatic best.
An older Bowie in the 90s reemerges with Jump and a PM-Dawn sorta sounding Black Tie White Noise among others. The late 90s sees a radical Bowie with radical music sentiments and video expressions that are seen from Hearts Filthy Lesson to Im Afraid Of Americans.
In the 1999-released Thursday's Child and Survive, Bowie is definitely at his best. Rest assured the DVD compilation is packed with classics and with songs that will be definite classics in the distant future. All I can say is that Bowie fans as well as the uninitiated definitely need to get this one. More importantly the first timers who want to check out Bowie should do a check on this one!
