Is it a sitcom? Is it a serious documentary about the Catholic priesthood? No, it's The Very Best of Father Ted, a choice collection of episodes from Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews' affably surreal sitcom. Ted's the normal one, as evidenced by his moving Song for Europe entry, "My Lovely Horse"--a modern classic if ever there wasn't one. Gasp as "poor idiot boy" Father Dougal becomes a rollerblading fiend in "Cigarettes and Alcohol and Rollerblading"; be amazed as super Ted saves Craggy Island from a deadly milk-float in the stunning blockbuster sequel "Speed 3" (well, it's faster and more fun than Speed 2); fall off the window-sill as devoted housekeeper Mrs Doyle utters the line that's almost Shakespearean in its sublimity, "Cup of tea, Father?". Graham Norton pops up to annoy everyone in "The Mainland", there's a whole host of Elvis impersonators in "Competition Time", and meanwhile Father Jack doesn't need an excuse to hit the bottle (or to smash one over someone's head) in any episode. Not saying Mass has probably never been so much fun.

On the DVD: The Very Best of Father Ted on disc has six episodes as opposed to five on the video release: the extra one is the Christmas special, "A Christmassy Ted". Extra features are selected commentaries by Graham Linehan and Ardal O'Hanlan, a clip compilation of each character, and a rather poor photo gallery. Picture is 4:3 and sound basic stereo. --Gary S Dalkin

The Very Best of Father Ted
Review date: 2006-03-27 Rating: 10 out of 10

It is a laugh out loud rollercoaster ride and even if you are not familiar with this hugely popular show, you will love it!!

What is not funny about the premise of 3 very bad representatives of the Catholic church being banished to isolation on Craggy Island? Father Ted Crilly, the embezzler "That money was just "resting"in my account!" Drunken Father Jack Hackett who's vocabulary consists of of 4 words "Feck, Arse, Drink, and Women!" And poor Father Dougal McGuire (the idiot boy.) He really hasn't a clue what is going on in the world and is honest to a fault. What about Mrs. Doyle? She is the long suffering housekeeper who is continually falling off the roof, has a 3 year old coldsore, and continually making tea. When given a teamaker for xmas, she sabotaged it and said "maybe I like the misery of making tea!" She cuts Father Jacks' nails wearing a helmet, and gives Father Dougal his bath. She is the glue that holds these 3 most unlikely of characters together. You will love this series, laugh out loud and crave more.

An outstanding mix!

This great DVD has a mix of brilliant Father Ted episodes from each season. Also included on the disc is a range of clips in one big feature, commentary and a photo gallery. Maybe not good if you've got some Father Ted already, but if a friend's told you they've seen it on tv and they think it's great, buy this, because they were correct!

Not quite simply the best...

It may seem a bit of a cash-in to put the Father Ted Christmas special only available on this Best of compilation DVD, especially as any Father Ted fan will already have the other episodes, but a newcomer to the series may find something to get their teeth stuck into even if this set doesn't really include the best episodes.

Sure, it has the Speed episode, a humourour take off of the Keanu Reeves Speed film, which is easily the best Father Ted ever. Consistently funny episode, with plenty of gags.

The Mainland episode is also very, very good, with many jokes and laughs and a decent plot line too! However, the other three episodes included are not that great.

The Eurovision song contest, the lent episode and the elvis competition are all very similar in plot outline to each other, and are not in the laugh out loud style humour of the previous episodes I've just mentioned.

The Christmassy Ted episode is an hour long, and while nice for Ted collectors to own, is also not among the best Ted episodes. The first half is fantastic, when the vicars are lost in the lingerie section of a department store, but the extra length loses its way a little.

There is also a clip compilation for all the main characters as an extra, but as it also uses clips from episodes contained in this set, is slightly redundant.

This is a decent set, don't get me wrong. The episodes range from decent to great, and Father Dougal is brilliant in each one. However, it would probably be best to buy the slightly more expensive complete season DVDs.

Just plain hilarious!

Look, this is just plain hilarious. The selection is good, just be mindful of who you give it too, its rated a 15 because of the language and some of the situations, so you may not feel it appropriate for children.

Nothing Beats It!

If you love Father Ted, you will not be disappointed with the chosen eposides! Especially My Lovely Horse!!
