Amazon.co.uk Review

Flashdance was the aspirational feel-good movie of 1983, with its thudding Giorgio Moroder soundtrack, Fame-meets-An Officer and a Gentleman storyline and a doe-eyed but iron-willed heroine played by the promising Jennifer Beals. By day Alex (Beals) is a Pittsburgh welder. By night she dances self-choreographed pieces for beer swillers in a seedy nightclub. Then she goes home and dreams of entering the city's ballet school and a professional career.

Adrian Lyne's film is full of compromises. It never really gets to grips with Alex's misfit status in a male-dominated world. And in the end, she is given the leg-up she needs by her boss (Michael Nouri) who won't take "no" for an answer. That's called stalking these days. But Flashdance also has some fascinating surreal moments. The infernal qualities of life on an industrial site are well described by good lighting and the dances take on a bizarre life of their own within the film. Beals is often in shadowy long shot for these scenes and, in fact, most of the actual dancing was done by a more qualified stand-in.

On the DVD: Flashdance is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen with a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround soundtrack. On disc the film still pulsates with that 1980s anything-is-possible energy. Apart from standard subtitle options and scene selections, there are no extras. --Piers Ford

WOW!

Oh My God! This film has it all... A love story, loveable characters, fantastic dancing and a soundtrack that'll have your foot tapping in no time! If its a fun-filled, entertaining film your after, Flashdance is it! But make sure you have Kleenex to hand! The end is boo-hoo sad, but just a climax to all the emotion of the rest of the film! A*!

American Dream
Review date: 2002-10-09 Rating: 10 out of 10

Flashdance is more than a collection of great 80-ies pop songs, although even just that would make it a worthwhile watch. Alex, an 18 year old (played excellently by Jennifer Beals) is a steel worker, who also works as a bar dancer at night, and dreams of entering Classical Academy and becoming a ballet dancer. But she is not the only one with the dream - 2 of her friends also have dreams, unfortunately they both fail. Alex also fails at first, but in the end she makes it. So this is a great motivational movie - it shows you that you can achieve whatever you want, and that you just have to keep on going, and not be put off. So, if you ever need to be motivated - do go out and watch this movie!!

A simple must.

As a former figure ice skater, this movie is just one of those you never forget. The music is to many maybe a bit too typical, but it has passion. Every time you hear it, even after many years, you just turn up the volume.
Jennifer Beals puts down an amazing performance, as a dancer and as an actress. I guess the story comes down to the fact that reality bites, that life is tough, but if you push hard you just might make it. Or, if you just like dancing, the movie is pure inspiration!

Romantic, exciting, classical.

Brilliant
