A basic introduction to macro-geological features
Review date: 2005-06-21 Rating: 6 out of 10

A 55 minute basic introduction to geological processes produced by the USGS in 1995. Focussing almost exclusively on North American examples, the documentary tours the major 'rock' sites of the US states showing geology/geomorphology in action. The scenery is often dramatic and helps to provide a good understanding of the phenomena covered. Topics covered tend to be biased towards plate tectonics and large-scale igneous-related features, although water erosion is covered in relation to canyons and glaciation makes a brief appearance. The programme concludes with the obligatory 'impact of mankind' section which doesn't even begin to delve into any detail; included as merely a token gesture. Simple, and now slightly dated cross-sectional diagrams are used to illustrate most of the below ground processes.

A pleasant introduction with some great American-only examples. Ideal for pre-GCSE Geography / Geology students (although pitched at adults, the content doesn't dig into the detail required for GCSE). The programme does not delve into mineralogy or any of the smaller geological features. Used as a DVD-ROM, an extensive library (1000 or so) of USGS PDF factsheets (which again are mainly related to the US) are included. The factsheets date up until 2002 and are more technical in content with illustrations and photographs. There are no other special features.
