It can only be assumed that the bill for the Queen's Jubilee was assembled by an ardent republican. The concert is a motley assortment of has-beens and time-wasters, a curious number of whom felt it proper to celebrate the monarch's 50 years by singing old Motown songs badly. The concert also features an extended plug for Queen's (that's the Band) risible musical We Will Rock You and Lenny Henry shouting. Bewilderingly Party At The Palace is not only redeemed, but made worth owning, by the four-song set by Brian Wilson with his version of "God Only Knows"--accompanied by Andrea Corr—-offering a heartbreakingly earnest performance. The concert ends with a pantomime version of "All You Need Is Love". Party At The Palace is the night rock & roll gave up. On the DVD: Party at the Palace is presented in 16:9 format. Songs can be selected by title or by artist. There are subtitles in French, German and Spanish. Proceeds from the sale of the DVD, "after the deduction of costs and expenses in relation to its production and distribution", will be donated to the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Trust. --Andrew Muller

Amazon.co.uk Review
Party At The Palace starts with Queen Guitarist Brian May--who looks more than ever like a haircut with a person growing from beneath it--playing "God Save The Queen" on the roof of Buckingham Palace; seemingly missing the point of his obvious inspiration, Jimi Hendrix's apocalyptic subversion of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Woodstock. Unbelievably, and theoretically impossibly, it goes downhill from there.
OK - but why is so much missing?
Review date: 2007-04-19 Rating: 6 out of 10
If the producers of this DVD were so pressed for time, surely we could have lost some of the more dreadful and totally out of their depth "acts" such as S Club Seven and preserved once in a life time moments such as McCartney singing "Her Majesty" to the Queen (who definitely was not amused by it!).
Other than that an OK record of the night.
Have to say I'm amazed by the comments praising Will Young's slaughtering of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". Sorry, but my idea of soul is not a grating, nasal whine with the occasional flat note. Almost as embarrasing as him twittering and twitching beside James Brown at Scottish Live 8 while the seventy-odd year old Brown wiped the floor with him.
Appalling.
His version of Marvin Gaye's "I heard it through the grape vine" was amazing, and when he sang with Queen, it gave me chills. Well done Will! (Ok so you've probably guessed that i'm a huge Will Young fan, but the mans a star!)
But seriously, this DVD is fantastic.
In my opinion the only parts that let it down are, Elton Johns so-called live performance, very dissapointing, and Ruby Wax's annoying, supposedly comical, irratating drone!
BUT HEY, don't let that put you off, it really is a fantastic DVD, and the finale' is spectacular!
All you need to do, is turn the volume up, and witness what being British is all about, so add it to your collection, it really is a night to remember on the DVD you'll never forget!
"GOD SAVE THE QUEEN"
Really a MUST for any pop/rock fan, because it shows all the great monuments of the rock era playing together the same evening! Phil Collins played the drums for almost every song, except the ones with Roger Taylor on the drum. Brian May was great that evening, and Eric Clapton too. You'll see a unique rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody all live in its enterely! Yes, even the operetical part was performed live by the cast of 'We Will Rock You' musical.
Phil Collins was really great, even when he sang You Can't Hurry Love. Then you'll see The Corrs covering The Beatles' The Long And Winding Road, Tom Jones covering Joe Cocker's You Can Leave Your Hat On, Joe Cocker covering The Beatles' With A Little Help From My Friends, Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton performing together While My Guitar Gently Weeps (as it was in the original record, where the solo was played by Eric Clapton as a guest, instead of George Harrison).
Just some few defects:
- Will Young's rendition of We Will Rock You is not so good
- Elton John's performance was not live but pre-recorded in a room, and he played just one song whereas Brian Wilson played four...
- The concert is not in its entirety. All the speeches were cut out, even Prince Charles's, and two Paul McCartney's songs were cut out, too. They were Black Bird and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
If you are interested in having those tracks you should look on e-bay if anyone is selling a videotape of the concert as it was broadcast on BBC that same evening.
- And eventually, being a British event, the concert lacks of some artists...
Yet, the DVD remains a MUST, even just only for Brian May's performance!
