So what can I say? The DVD had cut off some amazing parts: Corrs - Long and Winding Road, Ray Davis - Lola, Emma Bunton - Baby Love. Damn my favourite were cut off, I just appreciate that it didn¡¦t cut the god only knows and good vibration.

With any event as large as the Party at the Palace, there will always be some great performances left out and some questionable ones included.
Did the compilers of this CD capture the atmosphere of the event?
I for one do not think so.
My May opening on top of the Palace is an obvious choise. But why are there three further Queen tracks? In fact Brian May is listed as appearing on 6 of the 21 tracks. When you include Mr Adms "everything I do", "God Only Knows" and "Good Vibrations" you wonder whether the qualification for inclusion was being called Brian (or Bryan).
The highlight? Layla by Eric Clapton who set the gig alight with his effortless rendition

Gala performances always gravitate towards the tried and tested (or should that be old and worn out?). With a few cursory nods to the throwaway end of the younger generation (e.g. the manufactured "pop idol" Will Young), who were dispatched as quickly as common courtesy would allow, this event was true to type. For all that it was not devoid of surprising moments: the very presence of Ozzy Osbourne for a start, and the astonishing sight of Cliff Richard leaning on his shoulder as if they were old muckers. There were some entertaining moments: Paul McCartney singing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was a touching tribute to the late, great George Harrison, complete with guitar from Eric Clapton, who guested on the original recording. It was also nice to see Brian Wilson out of bed, apparently with his faculties fully restored and his voice intact. But against such sparse highlights, there were too many low points, e.g. plodders like Phil Collins doing his sanitised take on an old Motown classic. I suppose we should be grateful he didn't perform one of his own numbers. The remaining members of Queen managed to use the show to plug their laughable stage musical. And poor old Tom Jones continues trying to convince us that he is still a sex symbol. Let's book him a flight back to Las Vegas. Given that the lows were so many and the highs so few, it is doubly disappointing to note the presence of these dubious delights on the album against the absence of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", for example, or Ray Davies belting out "Lola". It would have been so easy to include those few special moments, it is hardly as if they would be jostling for space, and if running time on the album was an issue, the answer is simple: dump Phil Collins and Tom Jones. "Party at the Palace" provides a patchy document of a desperately conservative event for the unadventurous souvenir collector. Party off, dude.

Forget the first half, the second's great

I'm sorry but the first part of this is a drag -the so-called Queen tracks sound dismal without Freddie, La Bassey can't sell it any more - however Phil Collins, Bryan Adams and Annie Lennox perform very competent versions of their biggest hits.

The second part livens up with some great songs / performances, from an electric "Layla" (yes i did say electric !!!) to a stunning "Gimme Some Lovin'" what can I say - it's the oldies who rescue this CD. Ok so "Paranoid" does not have the power of the original but what can? Rod's "Handbags and Gladrags" firmly puts the definite rendition of this song back into his hands.

The CD lasts for nearly 80 mins, and so you get around 50 mins of excellent music -go for it - it's better than most of the complimations around nowadays, and it shows that the old rockers still can put on a great performance.

As a Queen fan from the first hour (well... for me that's 1974) it was a stunning opening with Brian May on top of the world standing on the roof of Buckingham Palace. The line up on this cd is great and the sound quality is really perfect. Out of the total evening the best tracks are selected in my point of view, though I think the exclusive live version of Bohemian Rhapsody should've been included. I was at the World Premiere on May 14th of the Queen musical We Will Rock You (go see it!!!) it is stunning. All highlights on this cd and brilliantly captured oldies. They are still among us: Queen, Ozzy Osborne, Cliff Richard, Paul McCartney, Joe Cocker, Brian Wilson, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Rod Stewart, Roger Taylor and so on. This registration seems to sound even better than on TV! Buy it - is my advice.
