fantastic b-movie
Review date: 2005-07-26 Rating: 8 out of 10
Remember when aliens were green and had antennas? If so then this is a great DVD to bring all those b-movie memories flooding back and it's not just a great nostalgia trip either, spaced Invaders is a fantastic family movie with a fair few laughs coming from the hapless antics of the little green men who speak with a martian dialect which makes more than a slight nod to early 90s Hollywood style Californian surfer speak. Unfortunately this is where spaced invaders loses my fifth star, too many of the characters who inhabit Little Bean (The town under attack) are flat Hollywood stereotypes, the old 'crazy' reclusive farmer, the slick JR type and the precocious child struggling to adapt after being forced to leave the big city for the small town where nothing ever happens. All of these can be found in any 1980s movie and whether they are an attempt at irony which has lost it's edge over time it's not fully clear, but hey what do you want, an art house martian movie????
Best bits in my opinion are;
All the martians, who are less than a metre tall, have identifiable characters, which play off against each other.
Their advanced technology is used with massive ineptness, often with hilarious results.
The construction of a giant 'Zoid' out of used truck parts.
You could probably watch this film with kids and enjoy it on two different levels but I recommend several mates, a party pack of Budweiser and plenty of snacks. A bit of a lost gem really.
