Amazon.co.uk Review

Why did Hollywood think it was a good idea to take Get Carter--Mike Hodges' classic 1971 study in gangster psychology--transplant the setting from decaying Tyneside to a present-day American metropolis, neuter the screenplay so that precious little of the original's acerbic humour and subtlety remain, and assign the lead role of Jack Carter, memorably taken by Michael Caine in the original, to Sylvester Stallone? No amount of Rocky-cum-Rambo routines can convince you that he's remotely inside the character, even though here Carter's psychotic side has been airbrushed out as he seeks revenge for the murder of his brother and rape of his niece.

Miranda Richardson is a wearily sympathetic Gloria, and Rachel Leigh Cook a not-too-bratish Doreen (is this actually used as an American name?). Mickey Rourke looks suitably wasted as loutish businessman Cyrus; Alan Cumming is an annoyingly smug computer whizz Kinnear (wouldn't you have pulled the trigger?), while Michael Caine loses all credibility for his cameo appearance as Cliff Brumby. Did he really need the cash?

On the DVD: Get Carter on disc is a classy but lifeless production. Extras include the theatrical trailer, cast and crew details, and six deleted scenes which are too brief to be more than off-cuts. Three spoken and nine subtitled languages are provided, and there's director Stephen Kay's pithy running commentary to enjoy. Even he, however, often sounds at a loss to explain just why the film was made. Thank goodness the original movie is also available on DVD. --Richard Whitehouse

An under-rated gem

This movie has had some really bad press and some really scathing reviews and are they justified?Well,to be honest no they're not.
A lot of people seem to think it's a travesty to remake Michael Caine's classic 1971 movie simply because they like it so much, but to be fair a lot of those early reviews were actually written by critics who had never actually seen this version.
I have always liked the original movie, but, now this is where I am going to be contraversial, this version is just as good in it's own right.
This is a very stylishly made film and Stallone's performance is easily one of his best.
It's beautifully shot,it has a great score (even paying homage to the original)and a wonderfully witty cameo from Michael Caine.
Miranda Richardson's performance is very good and Mickey Rourke makes a very worthy villain.
It's just a shame this has been UNFAIRLY torn apart.Go into watching this with an open mind and you will have a great time,it will even make you want to watch the original again!

Dont compare it to the orginal and you will find that it isnt that bad

Although this is classed as a remake of the original and brilliant Get Carter starring Micheal Cain I think you shouldn't see it as a remake, just see it as a original film.

Simply this film is not a patch on the original 1971 film, Sly Stallone's Carter is nothing compared to Cain's, the story isn't as gritty and relocating from Newcastle to Seattle takes away much of the films edge, this all results in the film being disappointing remake.

However if you see this film as simply a stand alone film then I think you will find it isn't as bad as everyone one says, the editing is quick and snazzy, the acting is good, the action is good; and Micheal Caine pops in with a brilliant extended cameo.

Overall the film is a good action film for those who are not familiar with the original, however if you are a fan of the original you may want to watch this film with an open mind, and don't expect to much because though it is a moderately good action film, it lacks the heart and soul and grit of the original.

Nothing to brag about. Once Stallone, always Stallone. Or if your prefer once Rambo, always Rambo. Or even better once Rocky, always Rocky. So here the Rambo from the subtropical jungle has landed in some suburban asphalt jungle, the Rocky of the boxing ring has fallen down to the crime ring of some underrated but self-overrating gang of gangsters, what else could they be anyway. You have the fights your are looking for. You have the car chases you are expecting. You have the fake eroticism you are seeking. But you have little less. One gangster gets killed by some others because he gets too nosy or greedy. His brother cleans up the plate out of pure spite and vengeance. Is it a film defending the family? Maybe, maybe not, because if the family were that kind of hectic, rootless and unethical life then I would convert myself to pure animal mating, it might even be nicer and go smoother. But as a bloody entertainment on a late Saturday night if you have nothing more interesting to do, that's fine, that will do. Go ahead and enjoy the punches.

Woeful! The worst US remake, and there are alot to chose from!!!!

Come on US of A, when, or perhaps the question should be why did you ever think that remaking classic acknowledged superb English films is a really good idea? All the US remakes have all be utter stinkers, and this is the worst yet! Sylvester (way past his prime, and his type of acting requires a him to be in his prime; he is no Gielgud!) looking lost in this undoing of a cult gangster film, no matter which side of the pond you live on. Watch the original, then look (if you dare) at this dreadful version and wonder who thought this was a workable idea or looked at the finished rushes and thought they'd done well.

My suggestion America, is to look for original ideas to pour your dollars into instead of embarrasing yourself with this dire attempt at tale telling. 0/10!

A blatant cash in and a complete failure...

The original was atmospheric, credible and gritty to the point of being brutal and remains one of the best films of this genre.

Whoever it was that convinced Stallone he could possibly emulate Michael Caine's screen presecence and acting ability, play the part of a London Gangster, or capture the same essence of the original needs their head examined.

Avoid!!!
