Synopsis
Director Lawrence Kasdan's GRAND CANYON is an introspective tale of the unlikely friendship of two men from different worlds brought together when one (Kevin Kline) finds himself in jeopardy in the other's (Danny Glover) rough neighborhood. Other characters from disparate Los Angeles origins (including Steve Martin, Alfre Woodard, and Mary-Louise Parker) also cross paths in this soul-searching lament of modern social conflicts.
Brilliant from start to finish
Review date: 2005-09-30 Rating: 10 out of 10
Thoroughly enjoyed this film on the big screen and it's certainly worth seeing on your TV. The very first gripping opening scenes set the tone of the film and provide a backdrop against which the message of the film is set. In a series of stories about everyday life in modern-day Los Angeles, little miracles happen every day and one person's simple actions can have dramatic consequences. The director does a rare job of creating a compulsive, very moving film without resorting to over-sentimentality. Fantastic. An American fairytale.

Awesome Gem!Review date: 2004-05-11 Rating: 10 out of 10This is an awesome gem of a movie. There's nothing particularly ground-breaking going on, but watching it you can't help but sense that some message beyond description is managing to permeate your consciousness, some big idea about life that demands definition, but which cannot be defined.
The subjects that the film tackles are actually quite ordinary, or at least- they're the things that occur every day and which have lost their ability to surprise as a result- marriage, child abandonment, street violence, office romance. But it's the combination of these various issues that has an effect- these personal stories that may not have any bearing whatsoever on the viewer's life, but which somehow manage to amount to something greater than the sum of their parts, with a message of hope left lingering.
'Grand Canyon' manages to transcend the ordinary by extending the awesome power of such a natural wonder as the grand canyon into the everyday and apply meaning to banality. It illustrates how the lives of the most dissimilar people can connect at random and reveal truths to existence previously unexplored/considered. It's deep, but only if you want it to be, on the surface it's a poignant drama with incredibly subtle, thought-provoking and moving performances delivered by its cast (from Mary McDonnell in particular) with an amazing score to boot and with a final message that's one of hope.
In conclusion - this is a hopeful, up-lifting and razor-sharp drama, and although the DVD itself is basic, with very few special features, there really is no need for anything that would detract from the film itself, so at this low price it's more than worthy of your consideration... 5 stars plusReview date: 2003-01-19 Rating: 10 out of 10this movie to me is like a favourite CD... I can put it on any number of times during the month with the intent of "easy watching background entertainment" but get hooked totally... even after watching this movie at least 100 times over the years.
Somehow this movie is not timeless. But it has some magical "sweet points" in it at times where you least expect them... and more of them than pretty much any other film i've seen. Danny Glover, Kevin Kilne, Steve Martin, Mary McDonnel, Mary-Louise Parker,Alfre Woodard! Released in 1991... if you haven't seen this film then just try it... i'm sure you'll wonder how in the world you missed it first time around.
Number 3 in my favourite films of all time.
Maybe not quite timeless..... but priceless.
Life is GOODReview date: 2002-04-15 Rating: 10 out of 10Grand Canyon is one of my favourite movies. I had it on tape for several years until it broke some time ago. I saw the movies at least once or twice every year.
Kasdan is one of my favourite directors, he is always able to put a special atmosphere in his movies. This is very mutch the case in Grand Canyon. Here the follows how the lifes of several people, strangers to each other, change due to series of events. All of this eventually draws these people closer to each other. This might sound like a boring, slow and very deep movie, but I'm actually an action movie fan!
Lots ot things do happens in this movie, some quite traumatic, and things that could happen to each of us. But this movie is such a positive experience. It has a very strong positive athmosphere that flows thrugh the whole movie. Each time I feel low I used to watch it for its healing effect. No matter what, life is good, people are good, and things do get better. Of Kasdans other work The Big Chill is the one that resembles Grand Canyon the most, in acting style and performance and the strong, but in this case positive, atmosphere. But there is something more in Grand Canyon. There is something magic going on, something beyond the ordinary. And the characters experience that there is something extraordinary going on.
I will not reveal all the events, since I wish not to take that experience away from you. Just let me say that the release of Grand Canyon on DVD is a huge event for me, something I have been longing for for years! I'm placing my pre-order right now!CoolnessReview date: 2001-11-26 Rating: 8 out of 10Grand Canyon...
After being totally immersed and watching half the film as a kid, i finally took it upon myself to track the video down.. just to see what the hell happened in that second half.Did it disappoint? Was it as good as I remember? Yes. Yes it was still great.
The film is relatively subtle, and intrigues rather than excite, to tell a deeper meaning about life in LA.
With weird stuff happening and this cool black dude, the film doesn't bore and keeps you entertained.
