Zombies + Cannibals = Gore
Review date: 2008-03-16 Rating: 4 out of 10

Ignoring the fact that this is more Cannibal based than Zombie based, this is a middle of the road adventure for both genres.

It is basically a poor mans version of Zombie Flesh Eaters (and even shares the same star). It has a plot, though it's logic escapes me (as it should in this type of film), revolving around an island, some cannibals and a doctor. It has actors, that aren't very good, ehere is some gore, a strange logo that keeps appearing (with it's own sound effect), cannibals that only fear zombies and... zombies that aren't as well made or as plentiful or Fluci's Zombie Flesh Eaters.

Still, it had a bigger budget than I expected and didn't dwell on plot points long enough for me to care about it's stupidity. You should watch Fulci's and Argento's horrors, then if you still crave more you can drop to this level.

A SURPRISINGLY DECENT GORY ZOMBIE FILM
Review date: 2007-10-25 Rating: 8 out of 10

During a routine autopsy, medical student Lori Ridgeway, (Alexandra Delli Colli) notices that the cadaver is incomplete, despite being in excellent condition the night before. As this trend continues, she finally goes to her boss, Dr. Dreylock, (Walter Patriarca) who refers her to Dr. Peter Chandler, (Ian McCulloch) a member of an investigating board for similar such incidents. As they continue, she notices a sign on one that resembles a sign from a small Southeast Asian island and convinces him to put together a team to investigate. Gathering his assistant George Harper, (Peter O'Neal) and girlfriend Susan Kelly, (Sherry Buchanan) to go along, and head to the island. There, they find the place is full of cannibals from a long-lost tribe, and a strange doctor performing strange operations on the locals. When they become the next targets for the experiment, they try to get off the island alive.

The Good News: This was a pretty pleasant surprise. It's big plus is that it feels like a great mixture of two big genres, namely the cannibal and zombie sub-genres. That it uses the tale-tell signs of the two, and convincingly, makes this one a really entertaining and clever entry. The cannibals, surprisingly, get the majority of the screen-time spent, as it's going to their home-place based on speculation of their existence, and that in turn reveals the truth about the zombies in a not-exactly-new twist revealed towards the end. There's also plenty of gore in the film, as this one has some pretty nice kills in it. There's a really impressive one where a victim is impaled from a trap that shoots up from behind to impale through the body rather than the other way around, with a severe series of dismemberments and skin devouring to follow, some really great impalements, surgical amputations and a rather shocking scene where one gets their face torn up by a rotating motorboat engine. That's not to include all the really wicked surgeries done in the film, which are also quite impressive and really bloody. That there's also some really juicy skin-devouring really helps to make this one bloody and gory. The fact that it remains watchable all the way through to the end is another big plus, as this one doesn't really get boring and features enough action spots to stay interesting, and only without a big taste for cheese will this one fail. These all make it quite entertaining.

The Bad News: There isn't a whole lot wrong with this one. One of the big ones is it's incredibly high cheese factor. There's a lot of that in the film, which can be evidenced by the general plot description. This also has marks for it in that category for it's gore and general atmosphere, which is a mark as it's not all that well received by most. That this one revels so heavily in it makes it something to be avoided by those who aren't that into that style. This one also has the problem in that it doesn't really do the big points from it's meshed styles. For a zombie film, these don't really feel like zombies most of the time, as they rarely do anything more than stand around and take orders, and aren't in the film very long to begin with. They're involved in the last twenty minutes of the film, and it doesn't really feature them a whole lot in that time-span. As well, there isn't a lot of time spent on the cannibal tribe getting to know them. All that's known about them is the name and island where they live, which is basically it. This here needed more information on them. Otherwise, the cheesiness is the main problem with this one.

The Final Verdict: While not the greatest entry in either the Italian cannibal or zombie genres, this one does have enough to like about it that fans of both will be happy. See this one if you're a fan of either of those two genres, or are just in the mood for a quick, cheesy time, while those not in the mood for such a film or aren't fans altogether should seek caution.

Utterly inept rehash of "Zombie Flesheaters" is dull beyond words...no suspense, no scares, no plot & laughably poor effects. Absolute bottom of the barrel film making.

AN EXELENT ZOMBIE FILM AND NOW UNCUT !! !! !!

Zombie Holocaust is definetly one of my favorite zombie films (no where near my favorite but still very good) if you class it as zombie flic. Zombie Holocaust if a cannibal film in every way eccept from the fact that there are a couple of zombies that seem to stand around for a couple of seconds moaning, scaring off the cannibals, getting killed or taking orders from the guy who makes them! And they only do these things in a couple of short scenes! The zombies are pretty pathetic in this film too. They look quiet good (the mascs seem to have a strange '"coincidence" to the mascs of The Zombie Dead) but dont kill or eat a single person! They seem to have the ability to make sudden movements or even run at times but for reasons unknown always stumble around when it comes to walking in a straight line!
The cannibals on the other hand are quiet good as they have a taste for intestines and eye-balls, they just seem to leave the rest of the body! But thats okay as its adds some of the vital gore scenes that make this film so special!
One of the main things youll notice about this film is the ecceptionally low budjet it had! The dubbing and sound effects have to be the worsed ive seen in a film! (close to bieng as bad as the quality of The Zombie Dead, if youve seen that film youll know what i mean) The dubbing is sometimes even going when the actors have stopped talking and started walking away from whoever their talking to! A great scene which leaves me with stiches every time is the part where a nurse finds a mutilated body in the hospital and does the most redicilousely dubbed scream ive ever seen and probably ever will see! Another hilariouse scene is where the cannibal jumps out of a hospital window, it would probably look more realistic if you pushed a load of pillows into some clothes and threw it off your roof! (I also think one of his arms fall off in the fall too!) But these badly made scenes are one of the main reasons why i like this film so much!
Another thing, and probably the only other, reason why i like this film so much is the surprisingly gory scenes! Although some of the death scenes are amazingly badly done (especially the one where a zombie gets a boat propellor in the face) most of them are very good considering the very, very low budjet! I love the part where a man runs off into the forest and gets caught in a trap, Cannibals soon arrive to cut his throat (a very good throat cut, nice spurting blood) and drink his blood as well as knife out his intestines and continue to pull out and eat many variouse organs of the poor fellow!
The acting in this film is very, very, VERY bad but if you do like this type of film then you probably wont mind this small let down. You will also be familiar with the terrible quality of the "digitaly re-masterd" DVD too but for this type of movie there are actually a surprisingly large amount of extras, better that ay films in the Vipco's Scream Time collection anyway!
Overall this is a great film and has everything a zombie or especially a cannibal film fan could want!!!!

Ludicrous fun!

Don't let the title fool you, not only does this film have plenty of goofy-toothed zombies but pasty cannibals, psychotically unhinged GP's and tribal body snatchers to boot. When corpses in a New York hospital morgue start losing various limbs and organs, the house quack quickly suspects they weren't just being careless. So resident zombie hunter, Ian McCulloch (safari jacket) and Alexandra Delli Colli (boobs out) fly off to the island featured in Zombie Flesh Eaters to solve the mystery. Containing some of the most demented lines ever uttered on film, 'I'm determined to have your brain!' Zombie Holocaust is an absolute must for those who like their movies crazier than the House Of Windsor.
