Of the vast and dismal reality-television genre, the PopStars/PopIdol phenomenon was the only genuine stroke of genius. The downside of Big Brother, Survivor and others of their ilk was precisely that they were completely self-contained. Both PopStars and PopIdol, by contrast, were so compelling precisely because they showed people desperate--always the key word here--to make an impact in the real world. PopIdol: Raw Talent!, presented with customary aplomb by Ant & Dec, focuses on the earliest auditions, when the most brutal hacking away of the chaff took place. As such, it is absolutely riveting. Some of these clips will be re-broadcast as long as human beings watch television--the woman in red managing to make The Village People's "YMCA" an even less dignified spectacle than usual, the young man delivering Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" as if reading the lyrics of a song he'd never heard in a language he barely spoke. The judges of PopIdol, especially Pete Waterman and Simon Cowell, earned much opprobrium for their ruthless treatment of some of wannabes, but the truth is that one can only marvel at their restraint. When fame and fortune are promised, vanity and self-delusion will drive people to limitless depths, and the delectably cruelly titled Raw Talent! is a mesmerising glimpse into the abyss.--Andrew Mueller

This video is brill it shows some of the funny bits like:-YMCA girl ,'Sexual Sharman'and O'h Christmas Tree'and the touching parts like when, Gareth came in touched the nations hearts with 'Flying without Wings'(Gareth is great)and Zoe Birket and Rik Waller.This is a must have for all Pop Idol mega fans !

Great entertainment for all wannabes!

I bought this video this morning and sat watching it enthralled all afternoon, re-winding my favourite bits. (No I'm not a sad person!) Thrill to the Christmas Tree woman, the (bad) break dancer, the space alien, the wobbly window-cleaner, and all the tragic, out-of-tune deluded ones who thought they could sing and stood a cat in hell's chance of getting somewhere. Could they be serious? And of course, there are the gems among the dross, such as Gareth, Rosie and Jessica. (Wish we could have seen William and Korben but they missed them out for some reason!) And how could I not mention the judges: kind maternal Nicki, blunt emotional Pete, cynical sadistic Simon and chuckling Doc Fox. Worth every penny and excellent entertainment. Can't wait to see which singer makes it in the New Year.

It is the most fickle industry on the planet. The hopeful mass to hope to perform to perfect pitch in order to obtain that dream record deal. This video shows the highs, lows and downright terrible in the quest to become the new pop superstar, voted by the general public. Some of the talent is clearly awesome, with near perfect sounding voices from a variety of styles. However, not all can aspire to be the best and the video highlights some of the not so sharp vocally gifted, in a polite and amusing way! The video is well prodcued and shows a balanced tale of the dream to be the best. It takes the viewer up to the point where the last 50 hopefulls are selected. You can re-live those classic moments when 'Nasty Simon' unleashes his spiteful tongue on those who stand before him. A must buy for Christmas
