It's 20,000 years ago and there's a bit of a nip in the air as the Ice Age kicks off. Manfred the well-meaning mammoth, Sid the fast-talking sloth and Diego the duplicitous sabre-tooth tiger form a reluctant and unlikely alliance when they come across a helpless human baby. As they try to return the tot to his migrating tribe, the trio must battle more than just the elements in this harsh world of predators and prey. There's plenty of light relief from the dramatic tension and superb action sequences, notably in the form of the brilliant comic invention Scrat, an apparently insane sabre-tooth squirrel who steals any scene in which he--and his acorn—appear (although a flock of keen but hapless dodos give him a close run for the film's comic laurels).

Featuring the voice talents of Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo, Ice Age is a thrilling, chilling comedy adventure that's undeniably cool.

On the DVD: Ice Age on DVD boasts a whole host of special features, including commentary by director Chris Wedge and co-director Carlos Saldhona, deleted scenes and trailers. The highlight of the bonus material is the exclusive short "Scrat's Missing Adventure" but for the real nitty-gritty go to "Under the Ice". This contains numerous featurettes of varying lengths, including "The Making of Ice Age", "Behind the Scenes", "Art of Effects" and "Sid's Voice Development". These tell you pretty well everything there is to know about the film and its creation. For additional humour check out the brief "Scrat Reveals" segment and Sid's commentary sequences. --Helen Baker

OK for small kids and small minded adults

Didn't like this movie at all. Very unintelligent plot line that won't keep the average intelligent adult awake.

Kids may like the slap stick 'humour'.

a very funny animated movie
Review date: 2007-12-02 Rating: 10 out of 10

ice age is one of the funniest movies i've ever seen and it is one of the few movies that i watch a lot. i like how you can watch this movie in 3 diffrent languages like in spanish, french, and english. i watch them in all three but i can't understand them in spanish and french. i wish they would do that in my favorite film monsters inc. the best part is the shortcut because manny, sid, diego, and the baby go down the slide. the best character is sid the sloth becuase he's funny when the rhinos carl and frank try to break his neck. this movie is pretty great.

This a laugh-out-loud movie for all ages and it's my all time favourite animated movie!

Superbly written, fantasically voiced - perfection.

The plot has a great pace, the characters are hilarious, especially Sid, my personal favourite - he is the most annoying yet endearing misfit I've ever had the pleasure of watching.

The writing in this film is first class. The jokes are swift, clever and keep you gagging for more (excuse the pun). It's hard to imagine animated characters with more chemistry but then if you've been unfortunate enough to have watched 'The Wild' (sorry Kiefer) you'll know exactly what I mean!

I LOVED THIS FILM!!!!
Review date: 2006-11-26 Rating: 10 out of 10

From the characters to the story, this film was strong. When I watched it first I was not expecting it to be that good. But boy was I proven wrong!!! The jokes are hilarious, the sequences are memorable, the characters are so believable, I just loved Scrat the Squirrel. I loved his attempts to preserve his acorn, and his misfortune in doing so. I also loved the scene with the dodos and the three melons!!!!! Sid, the sloth, Manny, the mammoth with an attitude and Diego, the sabre, and, of course Scrat the squirrel are all brilliant characters.Watch this and the Ice Age 2: The Meltdown. Though it is not as good as this one. What more needs be said?

Chilling animation

This 2002 animation hit is a film that the whole family will enjoy and thank goodness because there are SO many animations out nowadays that I've been worried producers overstep the mark but this heart warming adventure will bring smiles to audiences of all ages.

As the ice age starts Sid the Sloth, Manny the Mammoth and Diego the sabre-toothed tiger join forces to bring a deserted baby back to the humans.

Having different animals we are able to see different perspectives in the animal kingdom. Juxtaposing very different characters with different beliefs audiences are excited to know how they will cope together and therefore heightens the situation and the whole plot The preaching creatures are able to make their jokes about fellow animals and can appreciate what they have and will encounter in life.

The jokes and story are all about the animal world around them. This technique worked very effectively because it is funny but there are many serious elements to, like the willingness to survive.

The characters are constantly preaching about family and friendship issues which are sign, driven towards children, of how valuable those assets are, and I to found myself touched involving a latter scene when Manny mentions his family.

Packed with funny scenes audiences of all ages can appreciate the more physical then dialogue humour by the characters. A great scene comes when the bizarre friendship group try and rescue a melon from a group of dodos, watch out for the great physical humour.

The effects are stunning. Through the use of CGI the characters stand out and are appreciated by the audience and justify the genre perfectly.

Reccommended for the whole family

8/10
