a vipco disc with extras!!!!!!!
Review date: 2008-10-09 Rating: 10 out of 10

The first in Fulcis so called gothic trilogy, it has a great atmosphere, great music and convincingly good gory special effects. It is not as good as The Beyond or The House by the Cemetery but stands on its own two feet as an excellent addition to the genre.
Vipcos dvd has a non-anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer that looks like it was mastered from a vhs tape, it is watchable enuogh but tends to get a little muddy. On the extras front Vipco have surprisingly produced some extra material including a commentary with actress Catriona Mccoll and writer Jay Slater and a five minute interview with Macoll.

Possibly the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen......
Review date: 2008-02-05 Rating: 2 out of 10

With music stolen unashamedly from George Romero's 'Dawn of the dead', and actors stolen from 'Crossroads', this was 90 minutes or so of my life I will never get back. The acting is so wooden it beggars belief; no-one seems to be particularly afraid or interested, as if dead people often walk around in their town (perhaps they do) There are so many pointless things done, and ridiculous things said in this film that it would be hard to quote them all; but something along the lines of
'In 48 hours we'll all be dead if we don't do something!'
'Yeah but I'm hungry, let's get something to eat first!'
Or the fact that millions of maggots blew in inexplicably through an open window, but no-one thought to go and SHUT IT!
The 'heroes' were so useless that they couldn't find the priest's tombstone in a cemetary occupied by only about ten graves, so that wasted more time (they had to find his grave before Saints day, for some reason) So of course they ended up with only one minute left to do whatever it was they were going to do before midnight (I'm losing will to live by now). And then, just as I was contemplating what kind of sandwich I was going to have for lunch, they saved the day..........or did they? Who knows, and who cares.

What's going on?

A memorable film thanks to its huge leaps in logic (definitely a plus-point for films of this type) - A ghostly priest whose appearance causes onlookers to vomit up their entire digestive system, a mysterious empty house, mindless horrific violence from peripheral characters and a extremely amusing baffling ending that has no connection to what has come previously. Not bad...

a top notch movie by cult director lucio fulci !
Review date: 2007-07-30 Rating: 10 out of 10

from the director of "zombie 2"the beyond "& "house by the cemetary"
released under italian title of "paura nella citta dei morti viventi"or
"the gates of hell" the film begins when father thomas hangs himself in
dunwich causing the gates of hell to open & the dead return from their graves in dunwich.
medium mary (catriona macoll)dies after seeing the dead city in a vision.
reporter bell (christoper george)saves her from a nasty premature burial
& together they set out to find dunwich, they must destroy the priest before all saints day when the dead will rise to seek their revenge on
dunwich.
eerie atmosphere of a fog shrouded city ,lots of shocks along the way.
the music is by fabrio frizzi of "zombie 2 "fame .
forget the plainly packaged vipco version, buy the blue underground or
ec entertainmemt versions with digital sound .
another classic gore-drenched classic by fulci, buy it!

As a teenager, I saw this at the theater when it first came out.It was titled the gates of hell american release.I found it to be very edge of your seat to watch, and the scene with the lady in the car puking her guts up..literally!!!was a great special effect.oh,they used sheeps intestines for that scene by the way.If you don't care for extreme gore this is not for you,but if your a gore hound like me you will love this movie!.................Hillery............
