Although, it sometimes gives the impression of being quite low budget, it provides a good account of the extraordinary life of Joan d'Arc. There is a good mixture between the spirituality of her journey and the violence of war and the time she lived in. Leelee Sobieski does a good job as Joan of Arc and gives a convincing portrayal of this unique saint.

A worthy retelling of the life of a saintReview date: 2007-04-13 Rating: 8 out of 10 I do not know much about the life of Joan of Arc but from what I can gather this is a generally accurate retelling of the life of a young peasant girl who grew to become a war leader and eventually a saint. Leelee Sobieski is brilliant as Joan and Peter O'Toole as excellent as always in his role as Bishop Cauchon. The main downside of this production is some less than perfect special effects and a couple of rather lacklustre battle scenes but that is only to be expected on a TV budget. Other than these minor considerations this version of the story of Joan is very well told, competently acted and is an entertaining visual experience.Another Joan d'ArcReview date: 2006-12-04 Rating: 6 out of 10This is not a bad film and can be recommended to anybody who does not know much about this story and would like to get a visual picture of it.
It is well filmed, and the director and the actors clearly respected their subject and tried to do their best.
However, the real story of Joan d'Arc is so astonishingly unique and so full of religious, spiritual, historic, local, personal, etc. messages, that it hardly can be explained without great diffulties.
The work of Peter O'Toole (bishop Cochon)is very impressive. Because of the story itself, and because of Peter O'Toole, the fill well can be recommended. The best version of Joan of Arc.....Review date: 2005-05-06 Rating: 8 out of 10I first saw this original 2-part production of Joan Of Arc on the Hallmark channel. Around the same time I also saw the big budget movie "Joan Of Arc: The Messenger", and there is no dispute for me, THIS 2-part version is by far the better one!Leelee Sobieski plays Joan very well indeed, and the supporting cast are also excellent. The fact an actor as distinguished as Peter O'Toole is involved certainly adds favour to this version. He's fabulous as the Bishop Cauchon.
This is a very enjoyable movie, and everything is developed in a way that allows you to get to know the characters, even if they sometimes appear a bit "fairytale" at times. The other movie in comparison, appeared to go for the gruesome violence factor instead and totally lost any humanity.
The DVD is a little disappointing as it has been edited and cut down in length from that of the televised version. There are no extras to speak of either. But in terms of viewing and enjoyment this is the best Joan Of Arc produced so far!
Joan of ArcReview date: 2004-07-03 Rating: 8 out of 10I have already seen the Luc Besson version, "Joan of Arc: The Messenger" so I was expecting this 'made for tv' version to be a poor cousin. I am pleased to say that I was wrong.
Whilst some of the acting is weak, overall this is a strongly moving exploration of one of the most fascinating and inspiring figures in European history. Leelee Sobieski's portrayal of Joan is deeply powerful but never sentimental. All the other main characters are convincing enough but this is the story of Joan of Arc and Sobieski carries off the laurels.
The costumes, set pieces and special effects are effective but do not detract from the storyline. Music is used sparingly but appropriately.
My only criticism is that this three hour DVD version has been taken from a four hour mini-series and some of the editing is choppy and I would have paid a little more to see the whole film unedited.
However, I recommend this underrated version without hesitation as it is a 'must see' for all interested in the Joan of Arc story.
