Yoga - Learn Yoga
Review date: 2008-05-19 Rating: 8 out of 10

I agree with others that this is a good workout and that the poses are well explained etc. I do find the instructors somewhat annoying - particularly Louisa. Louisa has this irritating habit whereby she makes a tut-like sound between each sentence and I find this, personally, extremely offputting. The instructors rarely smile and there appears to be a show-off quality to how they present themselves. This would be a fabulous production, if it were not for these issues. Hence, I have given the DVD 4 stars - based upon the workout alone.

Simple to follow from first viewing with excellent results.

There is nothing to offend in this simply produced DVD. It moves at a gentle pace, is clear and easy to follow. I am a beginner and feel very comfortable at the level at which it is set, however equally I believe I could continue to practice yoga regularly over the next few years and there would be enough of a challenge to keep me satisfied for the rest of my yoga life.
I can feel the benefits immediately and the following day can feel the effects of toning too.
I look forward to my yoga sessions and find this an ideal way to work on body and spirit in my ever increasingly demanding and busy days!

Clear demonstrations, great instructors, and challenging
Review date: 2008-03-06 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is the third Yoga DVD I've tried, and by far my favourite.

I've been working with the Leah Bracknell 'Yoga and You' DVD, which is really great for absolute beginners like myself a few months ago. It's a gentle introduction with the positions flowing into each other. I like it a lot. After a few months, though, I felt like I needed a greater challenge, and so I chose this DVD.

Firstly, there are no gimmicks. No stunning backdrops, no piping music, no celebrities; just two very good instructors with clear voices working in a clear space outside (with natural sounds in the background, like cicadas) or a studio inside.

Secondly, the positions do not flow seamlessly into each other. The instructors are instead intent on teaching you each position correctly and helping you build the stamina needed to hold them for extended periods of time. The instructors also give the Sanskrit name of each pose (as well as the English translations), which is a big plus for me since I am interested in learning the original names of the positions. They are also careful to give recommendations to people who can't complete the full position (like myself in some poses), which is sorely missing on other Yoga DVDs. This means that you can work safely towards your goal, without strain.

I'm relatively flexible and strong, but I am finding these a great challenge! The beginners section will keep me busy for a few months since it's so challenging, and then I can move onto the 'general class', which is also on the same DVD. That's a big appeal for me; that I can move from beginner to intermediate with the same DVD and instructors.

I heartily recommend this DVD to strong beginners and intermediates. If you're an absolute beginner, I think this might be too tough for you unless you're starting from a point of excellent flexibility and strength. It is well worth building up to, however, and very enjoyable. I don't feel as serene as I do after an easier class but I certainly feel calm, well-stretched, and as if I've worked hard without straining.

Very clearly demonstrated and explained poses
Review date: 2008-01-19 Rating: 10 out of 10

In this dvd top Yoga experts Louisa Sear and Rachel Zinman very clearly demonstrate and explain 17 beginner and 20 advanced postures. The dvd is very enjoyable to watch, the sound and picture quality is quite high. The benefits of Yoga in general and the specific benefits of each posture, and how the particular parts of the body, the organs and the mind are affected by each posture are clearly explained. Some postures help relieve various discomforts such as insomnia, headaches, intestinal, digestive etc. problems, these are also explained. It is possible to watch each posture separately by selecting from a menu. So to learn a specific posture you don't need to watch the whole dvd.

I play tennis, swim, jog, lift weights and need to stretch before and after each type of exercise. I did Yoga a little many years ago but don't do anymore. I watched this dvd to see if and how I can improve my stretching program. Although Yoga is much more than mere stretching I found the dvd very useful for my stretching program. Even before I watched the dvd I had already been doing some of the poses in my stretching program but not completely correctly as I understand from this dvd. So I shall correct those stretches.

This dvd is interesting not only for people doing or intending to do Yoga but also for people who do other forms of exercise for health and / or competition such as myself.

Good Content, Production Quality Could Be Better
Review date: 2008-01-09 Rating: 8 out of 10

I purchased this item based solely on the good reviews it received here. I have done a little yoga off and on in the past, but it has been years since my last attempt. This DVD does provide the type of instruction I find extremely helpful in order to progress. I find the instructions are clear and precise, enabling me to clearly understand how to manipulate my body into the correct position for every pose demonstrated. There is also plenty of time given to each pose so that I can adjust where neccessary and ensure that my form is as good as I can get it, which is a vast improvement over other DVD's I've tried where I'm just getting properly set up in one pose and the instructor/s have moved on to the next. I've done the beginner program every other day for two weeks so far and I can feel a vast improvement from when I started in terms of flexibility, posture and advancement into the poses themselves. I can't comment on the advanced class as I've only watched it once to see what it included. I only have a couple of problems with this DVD, and to be honest after a few days I was able to ignore them and found they weren't distracting enough for me to not use the DVD. The sound quality on the DVD I find lacking. There is a hollow sounding echo to the voices during the first part of the class, which is held indoors. Also, I found one of the instructors voices extremely annoying at first as she tends to smack her lips between sentances, however that is down to personal opinion and I am able to ignore it now. The second half of the class, which is held outdoors, has the constant drone of Cicadas in the background (which the instrucors mention). The sound is naturally occurring and I think it is meant to add atmosphere to the class, however I find the buzzing distracts rather than adds to the class. Lastly, I would have found it helpful if there was a second part to the beginner class where the entire routine of the class was run through with a minimum amount of narration, for when you have perfected the poses and no longer need such detailed instruction, so that all the poses could be performed in sequence while focusing on breathing and listening to the music. All told, I would recommend this DVD based on it's content, however do be advised that it does not have the slick production quality that some other DVD's can offer.
