Amazon.co.uk Review
Directed by playwright Gerard Stembridge, About Adam is a charmingly funny romantic comedy set against an unusually trendy Dublin backdrop. Adam (Stuart Townsend) is the sweetly bashful young man for whom singing bistro waitress Lucy (Kate Hudson) falls. She introduces him to her family who adore him, she proposes marriage to him from onstage, he accepts. However, in a clever series of flashbacks and alternative narrative perspectives, we see that Adam has shown very different sides of his character and told a very different story about himself in seducing Lucy's bookish sister Laura (Frances O'Connor), her older, unhappily married sister Alice (Charlotte Bradley) and even inducing a deeply embarrassing boyish infatuation in young brother David. Two questions arise; which of these is the "real" Adam? And will he be exposed and punished as a bounder? The resolution, when it comes, is as pleasingly unpredictable as the film itself, which not only resolutely avoids the usual rustic clichés of skirling soundtracks and verdant scenery usually deployed in Irish films, but, in its deceptively light way, poses some pertinent questions about romance, fidelity and truth, while filling you with a warm glow.
On the DVD: Presented in audio options 5.1 and 2.0. The disc contains various extras, including trailer, interviews with cast and director (in which Gerard Stembridge explains that Adam is "a joke on the New Man") and b-roll footage. However, the interviews are sloppily edited, while the b-roll footage consists of little than various inconsequential outtakes, which look like they've been grabbed randomly from the cutting room floor and sellotaped together. --David Stubbs
A Gem Of A Film!
Review date: 2008-01-06 Rating: 10 out of 10
I watched this the other night and am still smiling now. My daughter and I sat glued to it and it had laughs in all the right places. Kate Hudsons' accent was pretty good, not perfect but then neither is mine! Frances O'Connor was fantastic as the slightly dotty sister who always has her nose in a book. But the most oustanding performance has got to be from Stuart Townsend. He was brilliant from start to finish and had us in stitches.
The story is pretty simple...Lucy,(Hudson), is the youngest daughter of a typical Irish family. She's always flitting from boyfriend to boyfriend getting bored with them all very quickly. That is until she meets shy, sweet and perfect Adam,(Townsend). The story is told from the perspective of all the members of Lucy's family, all of whom fall in love with Adam! (Including her straight brother to a certain degree!!!)
Adam is a typical rogue in disguise and yet he manages to break with rom/com tradition and gets away with it! I was left hoping he would, and yet I should've been wanting his head on a spike for all he does. He's a true womaniser and it's amazing to see how he gets about without getting caught in the act.
I wasn't expecting too much of this film when I sat down to watch it but I was very pleasantly surprised and I will definitely be watching it again at some point not too far off. If you're a fan of typical rom/coms you may be disappointed because as I said earlier, this breaks with traditional rom/com rules and has the bad guy getting it all and getting away with it. I loved it, as did my daughter and I can't recommend it highly enough. It's well worth the watch especially if you're a fan of Townsend. Give it a go is all I can say!

A SMART AND FUNNY COMEDYReview date: 2007-08-08 Rating: 6 out of 10About Adam received new life after Kate Hudson became almost famous. But while Hudson plays a key role this film is, quite literally, about Adam, as played wonderfully by Stuart Townsend. The film begins with young Irish singing waitress Lucy, as played by Hudson with an Irish accent that comes and goes, meeting the mysterious Adam. She immediately falls for him and their new romance proceeds happily along. Lucy brings Adam home to meet the family and here things get turned on their head. After seeing the story play out from Lucy's perspective we go back and revisit the same time period from different points of view, those of Lucy's two sisters and brother. It soon becomes apparent that Adam is not quite what he seems and that he has become much closer to Lucy's family than she would ever believe.
Frances O'Connor as the quiet, bookish Laura and Charlotte Bradley as the unhappily married Alice will each strike up their own serious relationship with Adam. As we see each of the sisters' stories unfold it puts a new spin on all that we have seen before. Even Lucy's brother finds himself oddly attracted to Adam while Lucy floats along completely oblivious to all that is swirling around her. Each of the key roles is performed well and enough time is given to allow us to explore the motivations of each of these characters. If we didn't really get to know these people and what drives them, everyone involved could come off rather badly, especially Townsend's Adam. But the director makes each character sympathetic enough and it all ties together very well.
A clever script, mostly terrific acting, intriguing characters, wonderful Irish scenery and a very smart plot device that adds a unique twist to everything...About Adam has a lot going for it. It's a smart, funny, enjoyable ride.
Not even worth that one star!Review date: 2006-07-04 Rating: 2 out of 10DO NOT EVEN WATCH THIS MOVIE! I was actually extremely offended by this movie. Not only does it portray women as deceitful, but it makes out that they are that gullible and uncaring. The worst set of 3 sisters i could ever imagine. As for the adam character, it sets a very bad example for men..the movie makes out that all men cheat, and its ok, because its in their nature. The fact that he gets a pat on the back rather than learn his lesson, is a profoundly disappointing ending.
Having also watched the director's commentary, he claims that its not always bad to act the way adam does in the film...and that he helps the sisters by bringing out their personalities, when actually all that he does is detach them from each member of their family. A close family, no longer close or caring by the end. Not a girly film in the slightest, and not worth a penny.
As much as i like kate hudson, the irish accent was off putting, and unsuitable. A thoroughly unrealistic and unsatisfactory film.A lighthearted movieReview date: 2006-03-08 Rating: 8 out of 10For the money here on Amazon I'd say it's worth getting if you're into this kind of film. A bit of a simple plot with lots of details missing, but cleverly done and intriguing to watch. If you have a few hours where you need some lighthearted entertainment with female company then you could do a lot worse.DisappointingReview date: 2005-08-02 Rating: 4 out of 10I was disappointed with About Adam, in the film everybody loved Adam but I just found him a little bit too smarmy. Fair enough every one of the sisters got pretty much what they wanted from Adam but I didnt like how he got away with it and I thought the ending was a bit of a let down. In addition Kate Hudson's Irish accent was a little bit more than I could take! Passes a couple of hours but nothing fantastic.
