The Emperor's New Groove was originally developed as an epic called Kingdom of the Sun and lost scale and most of Sting's song score (some of which can be heard on the soundtrack) on its way to the screen. The end result is the lightest Disney film in many a moon, a joyous romp akin to Aladdin in its quotient of laughs for children and adults. The original story centres on the spoiled teenage emperor Kuzco (David Spade), who enjoys getting the best of his Aztecan subjects. When he fires Yzma (Eartha Kitt), his evil sorceress, she seeks revenge and turns Kuzco into a llama with the help of Kronk, her hunk of the month (Patrick Warburton). Alone in the jungle, the talking llama is befriended by Pacha (John Goodman), who has just been told to vacate his pastoral home by the human Kuzco. What's an ego to do? That's pretty much the story and the characters--simple, direct, fun--a Disney film on a diet. For any fan of the acidic humour of Spade, this is essential viewing. As narrator of his tale, Kuzco uses a sarcastic tone to keep the story jumping with plenty of fun asides (he even "stops" the film at one point to make sure you know the story is about him). Even better is character actor Warburton (Elaine's stuck-up boyfriend on Seinfeld), who steals every scene as the dim-witted, but oh-so-likable Kronk. My favourite Disney film

... and one that far too many people haven't heard of. I believe that this was conventionally animated, when CGI was taking an increasing share of the market. Perhaps because it didn't have the high-definition quality of the Pixar films (think Nemo) Disney never seemed to do much to promote it.

However, what it lacked in that area is more than made up for in outstandingly funny script and characterisation - the old-school values of animation. "I've turned into a cow. Can I be excused?" Yeah, the tale is a little hackneyed - an odd couple who need to learn to get along to overcome their enemy - but it is just sooooo funny.

I have never been fussed about the "modern classics" like "Beauty and the Beast" or even "The Little Mermaid". But this one is brilliant.

Whats not to love?!

This film is possibly my favourite Disney film ever! And for all those sour-pusses giving only 1 star, boooo!!! No its not typical Disney with the guy n the girl n the romance n the hero, but isn't that all just a little over played? Get with the times, Disneys sense of humour is chaging, the films nowadays are just as much fun for the adults as the kids, and ENG is the perfect example!
I nearly wet myself watching this film! It's fast paced, witty, downright silly and has great characters with personalities that have never appeared before in a Disney movie. Kids should be exposed to "normal" characters that don't always one-handedly save the day and aren't perfect, but learn from their mistakes, cos thats how kids should be too!
I understand that if you had a dry sense of humour this film could go over your head, and you'd probably just think it was a load of rubbish, but lighten up, allow yourself to be just a little silly too and you'll be rolling around in histerics, I'm sure.
Have a laugh, and love the film for standing out from Disneys classics, things can't stay the same forever.

While not quite up to the standard of Disney classics like "Aladdin" and "The Lion King", I was suprised how much I enjoyed this film. It was a light and funny film with colourful characters and a simple, fun plot. I really do not see what is not to like about it!
People who are giving talking about how it is not a classic need to look at the film on its own merit and stop expecting every single Disney film that comes along to be on par with their childhood favourites..because really can anything EVER beat something which you loved as a child???
I say it's a great film and I was pretty excited to buy it on DVD, it is definetly one you can watch again.

This is one of my favourite films EVER! You can't get bored of it. There are jokes throughout the movie that are aimed more for an adult audience than at kids - making it the BEST animated film for grown up disney lovers! It's a classic - Walt Disney would be proud!
