A football match is always like a miracle !
Review date: 2006-08-31 Rating: 10 out of 10
A film about football is quite commonplace. A film about young boys who want to become VIPs in life is also quite banal. But a young boy who wants to become a star in Manchester United is as brilliant as a blue sky and as pure as white snow, and there can only be one out of a great number of candidates. Jimmy Grimble had everything against him. His unmarried mother with short-term manfriends was not a comfortable family situation. He was the victim of the bullies at his comprehensive school and one of the bullies was the son of the rich tycoon who was going to invest a lot of money to build a new gym for the school. The girl he likes, more or less, at least he would like to make friends with, is a pugilist and she does not like football. The only manfriend of her mother's who likes him and he likes has to get unattached and detached from another liaison before being what he wants to be, the father of this boy as well as the husband of this mother of his. And yet his success will come from a strange spiritual and virtual construction he will build in his own mind about a pair of shoes an old homeless woman gave him one day when he was being chased by the bullies. The shoes of a mythical football player. Jimmy Grimble decided in his head that he is only winning, and brilliantly at that, because of the shoes. And what will happen if the shoes are thrown away by one of the bullies? That's the film, the magic of the film, the magic of football too. And a lesson is given to us at the same time. Jimmy scores three times in the final match of the school cup, the first time by himself, and the other two times by using the bully who likes him so much (Ah! Ah!), once with a pass that leads the bully to score through a wide easy opening, and the other time by using the bully's head as a rebounding wall to score without him doing anything except getting stunned by the ball. Teamwork is fundamental in football because it confuses the opponents, provided it is creative. I guess the bully did not like it after all.

A passable, entertaining comedyReview date: 2004-07-15 Rating: 6 out of 10There's Only One Jimmy Grimble is a well crafted comedy drama about a boy who becomes a success in the world of football thanks to his boots which he believes to be magic. The underlying message is a good hearted one which results in a fairly enjoyable, unpretentious fable about the importance of confidence and self-belief. All of this is further complimented by some excellent casting. However, there are problems. The story of this film is way too sentimental and calculated and lacks the warm charm and sharp humour of Bend It Like Beckham, a film that amongst all the melodrama, at least managed to allow its characters to sufficiently develop. For these reasons amongst a few others, I will always consider Bend It Like Beckham to be a far superior film. Still, I won't dispute Jimmy Grimble's entertainment value and I wouldn't hold it against you if you rented it out for a rainy day.2.5 Stars - Not quite a throwaway
Elvis LivesReview date: 2004-01-25 Rating: 8 out of 10Jimmy Grimble is a Mancunian teenage lad, a die-hard "City Boy" (i.e. Manchester City F.C. Supporter), small for his age, severely lacking confidence and the victim of school bullies. But things change when he is given an old pair of football boots which he believes to be magic ...
The climax of the film is brillient but I won't spoil it for you.
There are several amuzing scenes including the sports teacher taking a crafty smoke in the boy's toilet and the goalkeeper conceding a goal through talking on his mobile.
They created a really OTT character Elvis - a 40 a day teenage footballing smoker. The shame is that he was only a central character in 3 scenes - stamping up and down on a lighter that wouldn't work, taking a crafty drag on his cig behind the teachers back after being told to put it out and sharing a spliff with a mate.
The shame is that this Elvis character could have been built up and provided other funny scenes e.g. walking off the field during a game for a quick drag.
An excellent film.
Propa Cosh!!Review date: 2003-09-12 Rating: 10 out of 10This is a feel good extravaganza film, one of the unsung british comedy films. The story line is about a under confident teen who is growing up in the rough inner city Manchester area. He has one dream, to become a professional footballer for the Machester under dogs Man City. But before then he needs to build up his confidence to be able to show off his skills in public. He does this by accidently meeting an old bag lady who tricks him into thinking he has magic shoes. The story goes on as he works his way up through the school footy team onwards with these magic shoes. But while this is happening, through out the story line there are hilarious jokes and gimmicks to entertain all viewers over the age of about 13. This is definatly a film to see.The best movie I've come across by accidentReview date: 2002-03-20 Rating: 10 out of 10I was satellite channel grazing and happened on this present day fairytale! Being a supporter of the other team in Manchester I initially presumed that, with the film being about City, that it would be an out and out comedy! There are some funny moments but there are also some touching moments too. It's one of those films with something for everyone. The music is great and it wasn't padded out. I'm buying it so I can watch it again. My husband though it was great. My folks will love this too. 5 star!
