Amazon.co.uk Review
In Corrina, Corrina Ray Liotta plays a 1950s jingle composer whose wife dies, leaving him to raise their grieving young daughter (Tina Majorino) alone. Dad hires an African-American housekeeper (Whoopi Goldberg), who helps fill the gap in the child's life--and then Dad's life. Soon an interracial relationship crossing the social mores of the era is underway. Written and directed by Jessie Nelson (The Story of Us), the film is a spot-on recreation of 1950s suburbia without gratuitous kitsch. Liotta is perfect as a working man of the day, given to white shirts and narrow ties; Goldberg gives one of her finest performances as the level-headed Corrina; and little Majorino is heartbreakingly effective. But the film entirely bears the stamp of one person, and that's Nelson, who has a wonderfully witty eye and a sophisticated but sensitive approach to the crosscurrents of emotion at play in this story. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
Healing Through Humour
Review date: 2007-07-07 Rating: 10 out of 10
I come back to this film again and again. There is nothing too original about it, but it is all well written, well observed and well acted.
Whoopi Goldberg plays Corrina, the housekeeper who makes a huge difference to a widower and his young daughter. Her comic talent is used to great effect. It's a rare romantic lead for Ray Liotta. He is better known as a gangster in films like 'Goodfellows', but this one proves he is a versatile actor. The daughter played by Tina Majorino, will move the meanest heart.
Set in the late 1950s, the contemporary pop and maybe older jazz songs used for the soundtrack set the mood and certainly enhance my enjoyment.
The interracial love thing still seems more of a taboo in America than it is here. This possibly held the movie back from huge box office receipts.
This is love triumphing over loss and is well worth the few quid it costs.

Corina CorinaReview date: 2004-12-02 Rating: 10 out of 10Ray Liotta and Whoopi Goldberg work well togther as a uncommon but plausible couple in fifties America. The comedy element is strong and adds to the smooth flow of the developing story line where the relationship between Whoopi and Liotta's daughter matures. This is a surpisingly emotionally sensitive Hollywood film. I really enjoyed the simplicity of events in this comedy. The Best of Whoopie GoldbergReview date: 2004-03-08 Rating: 10 out of 10This is one of the best films you will ever watch. Yes it is a feel good romantic comedy? but what's wrong with that because it is very well done. The young Tina Majorina will just melt your heart. Whoopie is just amzing in this film beautiful, wise. The film is about a widower (Ray Liotta) who hires a housekeeper (Whoopie Goldberg) to keep house and look after his young daughter (Tina Marjorina) who has become increasingly withdrawn since the death of her mother. The film is set in the 1950s or 1960s so there are racial connotations. Its beautifully made and it is a film you will always remember. One of Whoppee Goldberg's best.........Review date: 2004-01-04 Rating: 10 out of 10The story of a black woman who comes to work and care for a white motherless child and her widowed father. Good performances from Ray Liotta and Whoppee Goldberg - both playing against type. A heartwarming story of love against the odds - this being 50's America where black and white's together were unheard of. Good support from Tina Majorino as the girl in question - grief not an easy role for a youngster to convey. A lovely cameo from Don Ameche - in one of his final performances (he completed his scenes just days before his death). A truly charming film.Definitely Worth Seeing . . .Review date: 2003-06-17 Rating: 10 out of 10I first watched this movie when I was young, and I have rewatched it recently and it still has the same magic it had before.
This is a sweet, slightly sad tale of a young girl who's mother dies. The girl refuses to speak after her mothers death, and it is only when her father hires a nanny to look after her that she begins to come out of her shell. The magic and friendship that grows between the nanny and the little girl makes a heartwarming tale that will be enjoyed by all.
I definitely recommend you watch this, no matter how old you are you will find this film enchanting and entertaining and definitely memorable.
