Occasionally mildly amusng, mostly just crudity with no finesse
Review date: 2008-10-22 Rating: 2 out of 10
What the heck is this monstrosity? In the year 2000, Harry Enfield got rid of all his characters and tried to start again from nothing. Unfortunately he also got rid of the writers and supporting actors who helped make the earlier BBC TV series so great. This new series had a promising start, wth characters like Short Bloke, the pharmicist from hell and the mannerless rich pig, but by the second episode I'd realised all the new characters were just one-joke figures. If you're going to rely on catchphrases for humour, at least make them funny to begin with. I was wondering how many more sketches I'd have to sit through which just involve people talking dirty. There's nobody here with anything like the quality of Mr Don't, the Old Gits, the Slobs or the other hilarious older creations. And somehow the makers of Brand Spanking New show have been deluded into thinking filling it with sexual innuendo and crude language will somehow make it funny. It looks tacky and tasteless, and the sketches could have been written by a 9-year-old trying to impress his mates with naughty words and people talking about naughty things. Forget this collecton of dreck and by the DVD of the earlier, far superior, BBC series instead.

Hmm.Review date: 2008-09-09 Rating: 6 out of 10Until recently, this was Enfield's worst series to date. However, that's like saying Gordon Brown is better than Margaret Thatcher. It doesn't change the fact that both are/were woefully inept, and the same applies here. 'Brand Spanking New' serves as a slightly hardened bit of crust on a delicious loaf, which means it's still more than capable of producing good laughs. Mad Bob, Cornish Ladies' Man, Toby Carr-Michael and Camp Adolf are all pretty funny, and even the lesser sketches like Paxman, Manky Street and David Beckham raised the occasional smile just because Enfield himself is so naturally comical.
Strangely, his reunion with Paul Whitehouse was arguably even more average than this series (when you'd think having two proven commodities work together with such great chemistry would have been a vast improvement), and even THEN it wasn't without merit and was funnier than at least half of today's newer partnerships and sitcoms. It just proves that class is permanent, even if it does eventually wear considerably.
Overall, it's so cheap that you might as well give it a try if you liked the far superior Harry Enfield Show, and Harry Enfield & Chums. You'll still get some mileage from this, as long as you know in advance that's it's not quite up to the old standard.ROcked me off my chairReview date: 2006-05-27 Rating: 10 out of 10Following a rather bitter break up, this series helped me through a sinister dark patch in my life. My heartfelt thanks to messrs Enfield and chums for bringing sunshine back into my life. Thank you. xHarry Enfield - the opposite of a fine wine...Review date: 2003-12-21 Rating: 4 out of 10...in that he doesn't improve with age. The early series of his first TV show were amongst the best TV comedy ever. This, frankly, isn't. The best laughs are to be had in the out-takes and the fact that the DVD is titled "brand spanking new video". Yes, it is that bad, though not without it's chuckles here and there.
Please, someone, bring out Harry Enfield and Chums on DVD.What you doing Harry enfieldReview date: 2003-12-19 Rating: 4 out of 10this brand soanking series is no where as near as good asthe old harry enfield and chums, its full of crap charhacters , wheres kevin and perry, and the slobs and all the others, i dont wanna harrys thinking off shifting to sky, was it the cash, wellthe series is crap, he should have just bowed out while the programme was great, i brought this because i liked the old harry, but this is pure crap, but this is just a collection of the best clips from his new series, some of the characters are ok, like the pharmacist and the family who shoot each other and take drugs , but dont buy this because its a let down by harry, without paul whitehouse and kathy burke, this is just not there.
