Amazon.co.uk Review

This imaginative comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty) is a lot of fun, largely on the strength of Will Smith's engaging performance as the rookie partner of a secret agent (Tommy Lee Jones) assigned to keep tabs on Earth-dwelling extra-terrestrials. There's lots of comedy to spare in this bright film, some of the funniest stuff found in the margins of the major action (a scene with Smith's character being trounced in the distance by a huge alien while Jones questions a witness is a riot.) The inventiveness never lets up, and the cast--including Vincent D'Onofrio doing frighteningly convincing work as an alien occupying a decaying human--hold up their end splendidly. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

On the DVD: This Collector's Edition disc contains a "Visual Commentary" that features director Barry Sonenfeld and actor Tommy Lee Jones in an anecdotal conversation, but with the unique twist that they are displayed as silhouettes on your TV screen (imagine you're sitting in the back row of the cinema and they are up front) using a pointer to highlight particular events on screen. If you have a widescreen TV, the menu prompts you to switch to 4:3 mode to see this. There is also a "Visual Effects Scene Deconstruction" in which the tunnel scene and the Edgar Bug fight scene are dissected into their constituent parts; an in-depth documentary, "Metamorphosis of MIB", which charts the progress of the concept from comic book to screen; five "Extended and Alternate" scenes; trailers, including a teaser for MIB II; and Will Smith's "Men in Black" music video. --Mark Walker

highly overrated movie but okay to watch it once
Review date: 2008-04-16 Rating: 6 out of 10

This wasn't a particularly amusing movie and I would say its strongest point was its special effects. The story lacked credibility and failed to draw me into the world the writers had tried to create. This was largely because Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith just didn't seem as scared of the aliens as I think people would be in real life ( particularly aliens this ugly and nasty)and there was no development of characters - their personalities were exactly the same at the end of the film as they were at the beginning.I'd heard a lot about Men In Black and I've gotta say that it is overrated and the 1980s film Ghostbusters with Bill Murray is funnier and way more interesting to watch.

A pretty average film
Review date: 2007-09-15 Rating: 6 out of 10

This is one of those films where the hype was bigger than the actual feature itself.

I saw it at the pictures and the film was such an anti-climax after in-your-face promotions everywhere.

I suppose that what happens though when a film is little more than just a product, and the people who have produced it are desperate to get adverts into every junk food shop going. The music video was burned into everyone's eyes after constantly being pumped out via every TV channel known to man.

The film also seemed to serve as another vehicle to sell the Will Smith brand. He was at the peak of trendyness and everything wanted him. It was designed to be a slick trendy film to complement the slick trendy image. It's a shame really because he is actually a very good actor - but recently he has settled into more creative and demanding roles.

Some nice moments, some funny moments - but it wasn't a rip-roaring hilarious film. It was simply "okay". If it weren't for the massive hype then I might have enjoyed this a bit more.

Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith have a great relationship on screen, and I bet they had a pretty good laugh on set whilst filming too. Their cinematic pairing is the highlight of this film, and it'd be interesting to see other projects with the pair in.

For fans of the film, this DVD will be a great addition to your collection as it contains lots of additional material, although some of it does seem to be more self promotion.

Anyway, I'm off now to get jiggy wid it (oh yeah, I'm a mean street kid, I'm popping a cap in someone's ass as I type this, nowahm sayin'?).

Galactic Fun
Review date: 2007-05-21 Rating: 8 out of 10

Men In Black is a refreshing, stylish, action-comedy about a top-secret U.S. government agency that protects the galaxy, planet Earth in particular, from extra-terrestrial villains bent on world-wide destruction. In other words, MIB defends us from the "scum of the universe." The plot centers around a veteran MIB agent, Tommy Lee Jones, who decides to train Will Smith, a young, street-wise, fast-talking, NYC policeman, to be his new, alien-exterminating, partner. The story is quick moving, original, has and lots of action and comedy to go along with absolutely stunning mid-90's special effects. A memorable adventure, and, simply put, a winner.

Special Edition? Ultimate Edition

If you're viewing this DVD you must have seen the film and I don't need to tell you too much as it's a great sci-fi comedy adventure for all the family.

However this DVD is THE pack for this film (as there are so many poor "Men in Black" DVDs) and a definite buy even if you just want to show off the power of DVDs. The extras are truly amazing giving buyers a real insight into the production process from story boards to filming to editing and post production.

The "edit a scene to suit you" is revolutionary and will impress anyone. Who knows it could even help budding film makers by showing them the editing process.

This DVD is the only choice for Men in Black fans and a must buy for people who love their DVD collections.

One Of Wills Best
Review date: 2006-04-05 Rating: 10 out of 10

Will smith at the start of the movie plays a new york cop who is approached by a man in a black suit who offers him the opportunity of a lifetime to become a part of one of the most secret organizations in the world. The MIB (Men In Black) is based on a comic book which is based around an original myth that these people actually exist. The MIB are an organization that was put together to control aliens on our planet and basically keep them a secret.
Will becomes agent J his cop identity is struck from record and as far as the public are concerned he never existed.
That is all i will tell you but this is a very entertaining movie with lots of action and special effects and if you haven't seen it already then you really should.
