A generally good, Karajan's last Don Giovanni production

This is a live recording, made in 1987, of one of Karajan's last productions at Salzburg Festival. (Karajan died in 1989 at the age of 81.) It is enjoyable, although I feel that it could have been produced better. The stage sets and costumes are traditional and handsome, but the colour scheme is very dark.
Singing by the starry cast is good, although a few of them appear to have past their peak. Anna Tomowa-Sintow (Donna Anna) sings the role well, although she looks rather matronly. Julia Varady's portrayal of Donna Elvira is very good. Samuel Ramey sings the title role convincingly, although he looks a little stiff and is not so suave for a seducer.
Ferruccio Furlanetto is an excellent Leporello. He certainly has a dramatic flair - the best one in this production. Kathleen Battle sings Zerlina's role beautifully, but she could have been coyer with the Don and more seductive with Masetto. Also, I would prefer a soprano with a sweeter voice for this role.
Karajan's conducting is good, although his tempi are sometimes measured and slow. The Vienna Philharmonic plays most beautifully. The picture qualtiy is first-rate, while the digital sound is very clear. The recording is economically made on two sides of one disc, thus the lower price.
