Amazon.co.uk Review

Seemingly low-key but as wittily crafted as the first two series, this season develops minor characters--Gunther, Central Perk's proprietor, who is in love with Rachel; Phoebe's half-brother Frank (played by rising-star Giovanni Ribisi); the chick and duck--who will play key parts later on while the foundations for crucial story lines developed in Series 4 are laid down. The most momentous story arc covers Rachel and Ross splitting up when she suggests they take a "break" and he sleeps with the girl from the copy shop. Phoebe gets to know her little brother Frank who falls in love with the much-older Alice, for whom Phoebe will bear triplets in a later series. Monica pines after Richard and then starts dating the millionaire Pete, although towards the end Chandler is trying to persuade her he's good boyfriend material--clearly an omen of things to come. --Leslie Felperin

Not the latest BOX SET
Review date: 2008-09-26 Rating: 2 out of 10

I collect this series, and due to space limitations I want the NEWEST box set consisting of TWO SLIM cases containing FOUR DVDs, including one DVD with EXTRA MATERIAL. This reduces the required shelf space to a staggering 1/3!!! as compared to the original edition. The product AMAZON offers as NEW EDITION is an old product from 2002 or earlier containing THREE SLIM cases, one for each of the ordinary DVDs, and the BOX set is therefore 50% thicker. I bought series 1 and 2 in a local store, but series 3 from AMAZON. However, at arrival I was disappointed discovering the Season 3 box set wasn't what I expected! You can't tell the difference between these boxes by looking at the picture, because the box front design, as far as I can tell, is identical!!!

Required shelf space for 10 seasons: Original edition 48cm, Amazon "New Edition" 24cm, and LATEST edition: 16cm.

What about offering the empty cases and boxes for the series? - Many must have the complete 10 seasons by now and need the space saving for their own collection!

They'll always be there for you

The newest and final addition to my Friends collection (not quite sure how I ended up purchasing this one last). I haven't seen some of these episodes for years but they still had me in tears of laughter. How can anyone not find episodes such as the Princess Leia fantasy hilarious? And the episodes when Ross and Rachel ARE ON A BREAK (!) absolutely heartbreaking. Another absolutely brilliant series from the show that just kept getting better and better.

EMOTIONAL YET HYSTERICAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This series takes the six friends through they lowest points. With problems for Ross and Rachel, Chandler and Janice, Monica and Richard. This series brings a tear to your eyes. However, the jokes are still hilarious. This series if the best one it is a MUST BUY FOR THE WHOLE FSMILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We were on a break!

Thank God the writers weren't!

I'm not a big fan of 'cute' sitcoms overflowing with 'cute' people, but Friends just wipes me out. It's so much more than just a gang of attractive people going through contrived situations, spouting contrived lines. The writing, acting, direction are all of the highest quality, and that's why it was so popular, year after year after year. It was no promotion stunt that saw each of the stars on $1m an episode by the final season! It's unusual to find a show with 6 lead characters in which all 6 can actually take the lead. Usually, one or two of the characters are head and shoulders above the others, so everything has to revolve around them and when things don't, the show falls flat. Friends really bucks that rule. The dialogue is so sharp and the characters so well drawn that virtually any show, involving any storyline, around any character is a knockout success. Season 3 is one of my favourites. It's both touching and funny how Ross and Rachel finally get it together in season 2 after making viewers wait so long. And that's only the start - without spoiling anything, things don't exactly run smoothly in season 3. 'The' argument is one of my favourite episodes. Absolutely hilarious. So much so, it spawned a long running catchphrase. If you've never watched Friends, you missed out on some of the best TV of the last decade. And I'm so jealous - I wish I could experience it all for the first time again!

some great episodes and some slow-moving ones too

There were a lot of episodes of series 3 that I found a little slow going and even tedious. But this series also contains some of my favourite episodes of Friends:the episodes with Chandler's girlfriend Janice,Phoebe's brother who likes to melt things, and the episode where Rachel finds out about Ross cheating on her - an episode that shows how good the writers of Friends can be at mixing the serious with the funny, and one in which Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer give acting performances of a standard you'd expect to see in a highly acclaimed play on Broadway.
