Amazon.co.uk Review

Following in the reptilian slime trail of Anaconda, this derivative monster movie from early 1998 plays like a cross between Titanic and Tremors, with parts of Aliens tossed in for good measure. Director Stephen Sommers couldn't recognise an original idea if it swallowed him whole--which, by the way, is exactly what happens to a lot of passengers on a luxury ship that is attacked by a giant serpent-like sea creature with a voracious appetite for human flesh. Treat Williams plays the leader of a mercenary crew whose members discover the ravaged ship and wage war on the creature; Famke Janssen joins him as an onboard thief and con artist who just happens to be highly skilled with automatic weapons. Of course, the action grows more intense as the body count rises and along the way the monster is gradually revealed in all of its gruesome glory. A guilty pleasure if ever there was one, Deep Rising arrived in cinemas shortly after another waterlogged thriller, Hard Rain and if nothing else it provides proof that the B-movie monsters of the 1950s are alive and well and as cheesy as ever in the age of digital special effects. --Jeff Shannon

Dumb but very entertaining
Review date: 2007-01-30 Rating: 10 out of 10

A dumb but very watchable movie nicely shot with a few stand-out moments that some will find gross and others will find hilarious. Don't think about it too much - just enjoy it.

Awesome
Review date: 2006-12-13 Rating: 10 out of 10

This film is the best Godzilla type film that was ever made, I saw this ages ago and have been looking for it.
You will not believe just how good the action, acting, effects, storyline, twist and laughs are in this and it has a very strong cast involved with many faces you recognize.
If only there was 6 stars.
If im talking rubbish why is there only 1 available at time i am writing this review???
B'coz it is AMAZING thats why.
Pity they never made a part 2, maybe that's why it was so good, solo films are always good.

I thought this film killed time last christmas eve. It is one of them old fashioned horror films, completely unbelievable but scared my wife silly. Hard to stay awake during some of it but it provided adiquate entertainment.

An incident at Sea...
Review date: 2005-09-23 Rating: 10 out of 10

In 1998 before Stephen Sommers had his world -wide hit with his re-make of "The Mummy" he wrote and directed this action horror thriller set in the South China seas, where a gang of criminals hire a ship's captain his crew and boat to take them to a certain point in the ocean, little does the captain know they intend to meet a luxury liner called "Argoautica" and unknown to him they going to rob the vessel but by the time they get there something has beaten them to it, the ship has become a floating house of horrors where the surviving passengers and crew are scared to move as whatever came aboard hasn't left.

The captain of the boat is played by Treat Williams (The Devil's own) a passenger on the liner is played by Famke Janssen (Goldeneye) a couple of the criminals are played by Djimon Hounsou (Amstad) and Jason Flemyng (Lock stock and 2 smoking barrels)

This film has some genuine jump out of your seat moments and some excellent surround sound effects and the director borrows from various films such as "Jaws" and "The African Queen" a great movie to curl up on the couch with the partner of your choice and some popcorn, disengage your brain and let the film wash over you.
